I enjoy working with young people and believe education is a lifestyle. Each person is unique and has his/her own learning style, along with different strengths and weaknesses, so I would tailor my methods and materials to fit your student's style. I've home schooled two children from kindergarten through high school, culminating in my son being accepted to the UCLA Computer Science program and my other son attending UC Davis. I chose this type of schooling because I wanted to be involved in education and work with children one on one. Also my goal is for children to enjoy learning and not be empty containers to be filled up.
I have been tutoring for more than five years and specialize in the Elementary Grades. My lessons are fun and stimulating to maintain the students' attention.
When I first meet your son or daughter, I would begin with an evaluation to see where they are at; that way I would know where to start teaching him/her and the best way to approach his/her subject(s). I am open and flexible to your ideas and suggestions and to tailoring my teaching around your student's schoolwork. My goal is for your student to succeed and enjoy learning and ultimately not need me.
I vary my methods and provide a variety of materials, from hands-on manipulatives and games to fun books in order to engage your student and keep him/her interested and challenged. My emphasis is on building a solid foundation for your student, so that he/she understands the different concepts upon which higher learning is built.
I have been a member of the Girl Scouts of Northern California for ten years.
I look forward to meeting you and helping your child succeed. I enjoy working with young people and believe education is a lifestyle. We are so happy to have found Michele. She has been just amazing. In just a few short months, my kid has shown significant improvement in his writing abilities and math accuracy. He is able to write page long stories with little effort, all thanks to Michele's patient & fun ways that got him interested in creative writing. She sets high expectations and yet is very encouraging and motivating so as to boost his confidence. She puts a lot of effort to plan and make each class and homework fun and engaging. He is already an advanced student and with her help and dedication, we hope that he will be further challenged well beyond grade level. She is a careful listener and welcomes feedback and suggestions from the parents. She is flexible and accommodates changes to schedules when needed.
Overall, I would have no reservations in recommending her highly!
My son had two writing challenges - writing neatly and writing more than the bare minimum. If I said to him, "You will spend a full hour writing," he would probably have collapsed in mental agony at the thought. But then Michelle came to our house. My son has enjoyed every one of his 8 lessons with her, despite writing for almost the entire hour straight each time. The lessons are building his physical hand muscles and more importantly, the mentality that he CAN write more than 3 words and it will result in interesting and clear writing.
His schoolwork has had a definite improvement. Writing homework is no longer a groan-filled battle because he knows what is expected and he knows that he is perfectly capable of delivering high quality writing. Not only is his schoolwork improving, but he has recently started writing things just for fun! I found him writing stories about Star Wars the other day. Pre-Michelle, he never would have written a story on his own.
Michelle is extremely calm, organized, and focused in the lessons. She teaches by example and keeps the lesson on task the entire time. She develops creative, personalized lessons for each week, depending on what my son needs. Most lessons include "games" that are really writing practice in disguise, and I hear my son giggling while he writes these awesome sentences. HE IS HAVING FUN WHILE WRITING DESCRIPTIVE SENTENCES. What a miracle! Michelle is also flexible on the lesson if I have a request. For example, one week I asked her to work with him on his school homework instead of the lesson that she brought, so that I could learn some teaching techniques from her. She was extremely accommodating. Michelle provides optional homework to reinforce her lessons each week. She also writes up a summary of the lesson that is emailed to me.
Michelle is very responsive over email and texts. I feel very fortunate to have found her and that she is helping my son improve so much! Thank you Michelle!
Our family recently relocated from Germany to California shortly before our daughter entered first grade. With a limited English background and still in a learning curve she had a very hard time keeping up with the class speed. Looking for additional support, we posted our request on WyzAnt and quickly received a reply from Michelle. She seemed very knowledgeable and was good match for our needs. We met and explained our situation and Michelle adapted her session to better support our daughter in her reading. After almost two months, we see a clear improvement in her reading and understanding of English language. She can now read at grade level and enjoys her sessions with Michelle, something we couldn't have achieved ourselves so quickly and smoothly. I can strongly recommend WyzAnt and more specifically Michelle as a tutor.
My daughter meets with Michele 1-2 times per week, sometimes there's a third day. She helps with all her school subjects, but mostly in math and writing. My daughter loves to meet with Michele and gets so much done at each session. She is getting stronger in math and writing everyday. Michele teaches her in a way where she strengthens the child with notes, practice, examples and lessons. I'm very happy with Michele and most importantly my daughter is succeeding!
Ms Michele has been giving phonics lesson to my 3.5 years old son since two months ago. My son is very active and doesn't have long attention span, which is normal for his age. Before we started our first lesson, I wasn't sure if he could sit still for an hour long lesson. However, to my surprise not only he could sit for an hour, he even told me he had so much fun with Ms Michele right after the first lesson!
He has been learning the sounds of the letters and he has started to write them too. He feels great that he is able to write like his big brother! Most importantly, he is actually having fun doing the lesson with Ms Michele and he is looking forward to seeing her every week. He likes her so much that he said he wishes Ms Michele teaches in his preschool!
We are so glad that we found Ms Michele!
Michele has been helping our daughter (2nd grade) with math and reading. She is very professional, extremely patient and that's very helpful. Our daughter enjoys the lessons and we see her getting better!
Our son struggles with reading and reading comprehension. I try to help him by doing homework with him and reading with him – nothing fancy. Unfortunately, without fail, my efforts are always met with stubborn resistance. Probably because I’m just doing straight forward boring mom stuff. Luckily we found Miss Michele. Her lessons are very well structured but fun and silly and just right for my son who happily participates. If he tires or becomes impatient she gently encourages him to stick with it or she switches gears to keep him engaged. After their lessons I always ask what they talked and about and if he enjoyed the lesson. The answer has always been ‘yes’.
Now, after a couple months of lessons, he is gaining confidence and trying to read things on his own without me pushing him to do so. It’s really great to see him making progress. That said, he’s still in need of extra support. We’ll be sticking with Miss Michele for that help.
Thank you Miss Michele!!
My daughter was struggling with 3rd grade math and it was really affecting both her classwork and her self-esteem. She dreaded math and would cry when it was time to do homework or on days when she knew they would be doing math in class. Michele has changed all that for us. She comes once a week any my daughter actually looks forward to seeing her math tutor!
Michele is always prompt and prepared with a big bag full of games and other aids that help my daughter grasp basic math concepts in a way that's fun, not torturous, and isn't simply rote memorization of math facts. Since she started working with Michele, my daughter's grades have really improved. But to us, the most significant improvement has been in her attitude towards math and school and in her self-esteem. She no longer talks about herself as being "no good" at math and the tears are gone. She's proud of her progress and herself, and that is the best result I could hope for.
Michele is extremely pleasant and easy to work with. She's easily accessible by phone or by email. And the fact that she comes to our house and works with our schedule also makes this a very convenient arrangement. Contacting Michele was one of the best decisions I've made as a parent.
Michele has been working with my daughter for a year and with my son for 6 months. When she started with my daughter, she was in kindergarten and didn't know how to read. After only a few months with Michele, my daughter's reading abilities increased greatly and now after a year, she is reading chapter books all on her own. With my son, she jump-started his reading and after only a few months, he is able to read on his own, greatly increasing his self-esteem. Michele has tremendous patience with both of my children and has been such as asset to their learning. Coming into the Cupertino school district, it was quite a shock to the system - how advanced the kids were coming into kindergarten. Michele has helped level the playing field, giving my children the boost needed in their reading.
Michele is just amazing! She is calm, patient, intelligent and has skills to get my 7 year old daughter hooked for learning. My daughter eagerly awaits every lesson and Michele keeps her super focused with extremely well planned materials.
How does she do that?!
We are so happy with Michele's teaching and highly recommend her to everyone who is reading this review!
Michele has been working with my son who is in 3rd grade for about 4 months now and she is really great. Michele finds way to keep him engaged in what he is learning. My son has to do a book report every month and he has improved by 2 number grades. His reading has improved a lot. She really takes the time to listen to him and explain why and what he is doing. I would recommend Michele as a tutor she really is great.
Michele is a very patient, responsible and responsive tutor. She gives me detailed descriptions of each lesson with my son who is a fourth grader. She also recommends books and ways to increase my son's interest in reading. She always keep me in a loop whenever my son is not paying attention, so that I can talk to him to ensure that the lessons are spent productively. With Michele's help, all the homework is done when I come home from work. She is a great help to me.
Michele has helped my child overcome initial struggles with school work. She has accompanied us through first grade and we are seeing tremendous change. My son is now an above grade-average reader and has a solid foundation in math. Most of all, he enjoys what he does and seeing how his hard work translates into success. Michele is extremely motivating and supportive, yet she ensures they reach their learning objectives one session at a time. My son actually tells me he looks forward to doing his homework with her! I can highly recommend her as a tutor.
Professional, prompt and courteous Michele has a unique talent for tutoring children. She was flexible in her availability and her rate was very reasonable. She had an excellent knowledge of the subject and demonstrated great communicative skills. I was very pleased and would definitely recommend her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a BS in Graphic Design with a Concentration in Illustration. I have taught children using "Drawing with Children" by Mona Brookes and "Draw Squad" by Mark Kistler.
Every person can be an artist and learn to draw; their eyes and hands just need to be trained. Learning to draw will enhance all other subjects because projects often need artwork. Being able to draw will also boost a child's self confidence and enjoyment.
Having home schooled my children from Kindergarten through high school culminating in my son being accepted into UCLA's School of Engineering as a Freshman with a Computer Science major, I feel qualified to teach Elementary Subjects (K-6th).
I taught my children reading, phonics, spelling, math, science, and history. We used hands-on manipulatives, games, and field trips to supplement our math, science, and history textbooks and classroom work. In addition, we read classic literature to coincide with the period of history we were studying.
I was able to tailor my teaching to my children's learning styles to help them in their areas of weakness and expand their areas of strength. I encouraged and directed my children to explore their own areas of interest and also to use their gifts to serve others. I taught them effective ways to use their time and how to set up their environment to be most conducive to learning.
I have been tutoring elementary students daily for the past two years in the areas of Drawing, Math, Science, Grammar, Reading, Spelling, Vocabulary, Phonics, and Study Skills.
I look forward to helping your student.
Going beyond drill and focusing on understanding concepts, I approach math in fun and engaging methods. I use games to build comprehension and speed. I work with each student individually to help them understand in the way that fits their style of learning best.
I taught basic computer usage, from how to use the mouse (click and drag) to the keyboard and typing. How to search, create, open and save files, search the web, and create bookmarks was also covered.
Also I demonstrated all the different applications, how to send and receive email, and how to print. Using a computer is considered a necessity these days for word processing, searching for information, and communicating with others. It is vital to have a solid, basic understanding of how to use the computer.
I taught my son to read by using the phonics rules and introducing him to the letters of the alphabet and their corresponding sounds. Then I showed him how to blend the sounds of a consonant, vowel, and consonant together to say a word. We slowly progressed through the word families (i.e., -at, -it) to practice and build his confidence and vocabulary. At the same time we covered the sight words, gradually moving from beginning to intermediate to challenging sight words. We also read simple books so that my son could see that letters are part of words and that words are part of sentences. I used flashcards to introduce all the sounds and variations of sounds (i.e. soft g and hard g) of the vowels, consonants, and consonant combinations. Silent writing and writing by dictation also supported phonics learning by having my son connect the sound of the letter with its written form.
For over two years I have been teaching phonics to students who are struggling readers and helping them to read more smoothly. I reviewed the vowels and consonant sounds and consonant combinations so that the students could decode words more easily. The students practiced breaking words into syllables and sounding out the letter sounds to decode unknown or nonsense words.
Environment affects learning. I taught my children to have a neat study area with all their "tools" ready (pencil, eraser, ruler, etc.). The lighting was not to bright or dark and the table was placed away from distractions. My children would review their homework assignments and log them into a daily planner so that they could keep organized and take responsibility for their work. It was up to them to complete their assignments and let me know so that I could check them. I showed them how to use a calendar to record due dates and plan incremental steps toward completing projects and reports.
For over two years I have been teaching elementary students to budget their time wisely and plan their schedules in order to complete their projects and book reports. I gave them suggestions on posture, lighting, and materials to enhance their study skills.
