About Terry

Math can make sense if you understand underlying concepts, know which rules to apply, and know when to apply them. Too often math is taught as a collection of rules and shortcuts without enough time spent developing an understanding of the underlying concepts. I use examples and exercises appropriate to your existing skill level to develop this understanding.

Math skills are essential to open many career opportunities, and math can be fun and interesting! I can help students who are struggling, have fallen behind, or already have good grades. I work with you to identify how to improve understanding, retention, test taking skills, and grades.

I'll demonstrate my own tried-and-true learning method. It breaks the learning process down into manageable steps, encouraging you to move at your own pace and build confidence while learning how to learn efficiently and effectively. These are skills that will serve in many subjects for years to come.

I have experience tutoring math and science at the college level, both individually and in groups. I graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz with a Bachelor's degree in Biology / Environmental Studies Combined. I am a permanent member of Phi Beta Kappa (the National Honor Society), and graduated summa cum laude with a cumulative GPA of 4.0. These accomplishments grew out of hard work, persistence, and really effective study skills.

I love math and my enthusiasm is contagious. I'm a patient instructor and I care that you get a solid math foundation upon which to build your future. I look forward to helping you have fun learning!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Study Skills

I graduated at the top of my class because I developed really efficient study skills and I persisted. It required strategies in key areas; materials management, time management, behaviors that exploit the way the brain naturally functions, and test taking strategies. I can pass all this on to you or your child, building success and confidence as we go.

Materials management includes how you lay out your notes, where you file them, how you organize them, and management of your supplies (calculator batteries, pencils, etc.)

Time management involves goal clarification with consideration of deadlines, making sure you are spending the right amount of time on each subject or task, and taking advantage of all the time available to you.

I use a set of proven behaviors that maximize the learning and memory functions of the brain. This will include identifying your unique learning style so you can work in harmony with your brain, not against it.

I'll teach you these methods so you can learn more in less time and remember more of it. Then we'll address test taking strategies to boost your scores. Putting all this together makes a winning combination!

Knowledgeable — Terry helped me tremendously this last semester. I am a good student, but the teacher I had this year made no sense to me. Terry helped understand the concepts for Algebra II. ...
