Hi! My name is Jessica. I have a B.A. in English and LOVE teaching and working with kids of all ages. Since I graduated from college in 2007, I have held several teaching jobs. Two were in Asia. I taught 5th graders English as a second language in Taiwan for two years and then was a 4th-6th grade homeroom teacher in Hong Kong for a year. Since returning to the States, I have worked with kids ages 4-18 as an instructor at Eye Level Learning Center in San Ramon, as well as been a private tutor with Club Z!, a well-known tutoring company in the Bay Area. I recently moved to Santa Rosa and would love to help students here, too.
A little more about me and my teaching philosophy: I believe learning is, can, and should be fun! In my sessions, students explore all aspects of a subject area and really learn to master each skill. Whether we're talking about how to write a persuasive essay or how to do division, topics are broken down step-by-step so that they are manageable and not intimidating. I prepare games that reenforce what we are learning, and I make sure we reassess things as we go so that students can track their progress. My main areas of expertise are English (grammar, writing, punctuation, you name it) and elementary or middle school math. I can help students study for many other areas, though, too. Hi! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a BA in English and have taught elementary students in either full-time or tutoring capacities since graduating. I taught 5th graders English for two years in Taiwan at the New Taipei City English Wonderland camps and was a homeroom teacher for 4th-6th grade at Hong Kong Adventist Academy in Clear Water Bay, Hong Kong for one school year. I worked full-time as a tutor at Eye Level Learning Center in San Ramon in 2014, and I have also been a tutor with Club Z! where I tutored elementary students. I was also a teacher's aide in a kindergarten and 1st grade classroom at John Reed Elementary School in Rohnert Park, CA, in 2015. I am well-qualified to work with young students and find that using a wide variety of games, challenges, and other techniques is the best way to engage young students and keep them interested in the topic at hand.
