Hello,

Do you find yourself struggling to understand science and math? Find your instructor confusing? Wondering just what complex numbers are good for?

Don’t worry, I can help. Most people can master science and math subjects with a bit of help – they just need motivation, explanations from someone familiar with the material, and a bit of practice.

Why bother with math and science? Well, math and science topics, whether they are at the high school or college level, are the tools we use to understand the physical world around us. Whether or not one wishes to pursue a career in the sciences, it is generally useful to have a better appreciation of our surroundings, and we improve our ability to understand and appreciate our surroundings through math and science.

About me: I received my PhD in chemistry (spectroscopy) from the University of California (go Bears!). I am married and have two children who benefit from my being a stay at home parent. Tutoring students gives me the satisfaction of helping others better understand the universe while earning a bit of cash to keep my kids flush in books and video games.

Approved Subjects

Chemistry

Chemistry

I have both tutored students and taught courses in general chemistry since 1986.
Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry

I am a PhD. chemist (UC Berkeley, 1991). I have taught Organic Chemistry Laboratory, Organic Spectroscopy, and Advanced Organic Spectroscopy as an Adjunct Professor at Southern Oregon University.
Praxis

Praxis

I am a native speaker of American English with several peer-reviewed scientific publications. I am a graduate of the University of California, where I received a BS. and PhD. in chemistry. I have done quite well on several standardized tests, including the general and subject (chemistry) Praxis exams. I recommend students prepare for standardized tests by working through practice exams for relatively short periods of time several times a day. This gives them familiarity with the test format while identifying areas to focus on during tutoring sessions.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I am a Ph.D. chemist who has taught at the university and high school level. It is my experience that problems with study skill generally result from lack of routine, failure to write down assignments, and failure to take the assignment seriously. I stress that students should keep a notebook, and this notebook should include homework assignments with dates due and exam schedules for all classes. Students should take the notebook home each night and refer to it at a set time in order to keep up with assigned work. This set time should be as early as possible following school, and assignments should be checked off or otherwise marked once completed. (I have found that the act of physically marking an assignment as 'done' greatly increases the likelihood of doing the work.) The main goal is to encourage daily work on assignments while the lessons are still fresh in mind and to prevent the student from falling behind. Establishing such a routine vital to good study habits.
TEAS

TEAS

The TEAS exam tests potential nursing students in the subject areas of reading comprehension, math, science, and language usage. I am a PhD. chemist with multiple peer-reviewed publications, a native speaker of Standard American English, and a part-time grant writer for non-profit agencies.

Great college physics tutoring!

John was great. He really helped with figuring out what my weakness was. Not just show me how to do the Physics problems but strategies on how to approach each problem and what to look for. He has been the best tutor I have had so far.

So Patient, Really Good Explanation

He was able to break down every topic into the smallest points and really hammer those home. He has really good analogies that help you visualize problems that don’t make sense. He also gave me some tips and studying. You can tell he likes teaching and he’s so good at it. I wish he was my professor instead. I will most certainly be booking another lesson with him again :)

Informative and helpful

John P has a broad range of understanding, and is patient in his explanation. I highly recommend him. John P offered a very insightful idea that was specifically helpful to my needs.

Very Knowledgeable With Clear Relatable Explanation

He was very helpful when working through homework problems and gave background on important concepts. 10/10 tutor and 10/10 on his chemistry knowledge

Great tutor

It’s great that John can tutor in physics, chemistry, and accelerated geometry. It has really helped my high school freshman do well with a very arduous course schedule.

Very knowledgeable, great attitude and enthusiastic.

John's enthusiasm, knowledge, and passion to teach have motivated my daughter to improve, and actually enjoy something she had not been interested in previously. He is wonderful. We look forward to every session with him. We are so thankful to have found John

Great teacher

Most tutors I’ve had tell me how to solve a specific problem without explaining the concept behind it. John taught me the underlying concept in detail in order to clarify parts that weren’t explained properly to me in my class. Also very patient so he took as long as necessary for me to understand

Alexander, 7 lessons with John

Willing to go over multiple science topics.

John and I went over at least two types of sciences due to what is coming up with my classes. Which covers three types of sciences in one class and went over topics provided by the teacher that was given to me prior to my session with him.

Catherine, 3 lessons with John

Very Knowledgeable

John was excellent. He took his time to make sure that we understood everything he was going over and related chemistry to real life situations so that we could better understand. Will definitely use him in the future for other Chemistry classes.

Taylor, 1 lesson with John

very knowledgeable

My daughter needed help studying for a TEAS test. She walked away from the session with confidence and we're excited to see her score on the test
