Hello!

I help all sorts of students from 2nd grade math, to university Physiology and Physics. I have saved failing students, helped students become valedictorian, helped student's raise their MCAT score, enabled students to pass assorted AP exams, and helped students gain matriculation into colleges such as Princeton.

I am not only a professional tutor, I also play the role of motivational counselor and mentor. I am a personal trainer and motivational coach and also work part time as a Master Trainer at Synergy Health Club in Petaluma. I can also provide step-by-step documents for a written form of instruction. This stems from my experience writing solution manuals for textbooks.

In my own educational career, I have studied electrical engineering, physics, neuroscience, and kinesiology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I have a masters in Biomedicine and also attended medical school for two years at Chicago Medical School. I founded a robotics organization and have authored academic papers on muscle physiology and behavioral modification for weight loss. Additionally, I am writing an illustrated review guide for AP physics that will be released this year.

Although I have been in multiple majors, the one thing that remained constant was my desire to teach. I was a tutor both on a volunteer and paid basis all throughout my college career in an assorted variety of science and math based subjects. As a graduate student I taught a course in aerobics and conditioning and was proudly the first teacher to give essay based questions in what is typically considered a blow off course. This desire to teach even carried into medical school where I was given the honor to lecture to medical and podiatry students on motivational counseling for weight loss.

I believe that no job, no career, no dream, is outside of the reach of persistence and dedication. My approach to tutoring is to guide the student to develop their own system of learning. I lecture students with the intention of empowering them to become their own tutors and to evolve past the need for my services. The skills I hope to impart will advance the student's ability to learn in all realms, beyond the subject matter we cover. There is nothing I enjoy more than watching a student become a master of their own learning.

Subjects

Elementary Education

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

Elementary Math can be broken down into two main categories; memorization of the facts or rules (multiplication table, addition, etc.) and the application of these principles. Mastery of the subject entails developing the ability to memorize and the conceptual facets of the mind. I teach all subjects with the same fundamental process. I evaluate a student's baseline ability and identify the types of thinking skills that can be developed. I then design specific homework assignments and "brain exercises" to not only improve their grades, and their performance in future classes, but improve their ability to think. My goal is to impart skills, not just information.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I have studied under multiple majors (electrical engineering, physics, kinesiology) prior to attending medical school. With each major I learned about different processes of learning and education and gained and overall understanding of how to efficiently study. I also gave a lecture on efficient study techniques to incoming medical and podiatry students at my former medical school. Studying can be broken down into a process and a science that has some commonalities, but must be uniquely tailored and adopted to an individual’s learning style. I enjoy guiding students to discover and gain efficiency in their own learning style.

Algebra 1

I break down Algebra 1 into the major classes of fundamental problems that will be presented. From each fundamental problem, we will work from the base easiest example and then increase in complexity. I also help the student to establish a general organizational scheme for solving math problems. This ability will extend far beyond the subject we are covering. Biology,

Biology

As a former medical student and researcher, I have accumulated many years of study in biology. Biology is a memory based class that is based on the student’s ability to recall facts. As opposed to simply teaching the facts, I help the student to develop their own faculties of studying, learning, forming mnemonics, time management, and creating a repetition schedule. This ensures that the student is studying more efficiently and can remember more for a longer period of time. I teach all subjects with the same fundamental process. Physics is a conceptual based course that requires the student to understand and be able to work through a variety of different problems. Establishing an ability to draw a good free body diagram, organize the givens, and identify the problem, is very important. I also work with the student to help them understand how to apply the fundamental equations of physics for each problem and be able to select the appropriate equation for the problem. Biochemistry,

Biochemistry

I have a thorough background in biochemistry, since I took it as an undergraduate student and again in medical school. Some of the concepts in biochemistry are more procedural based and require an understanding of enzyme kinetics, reading graphs, and application of these principles. I help the student to understand these base principles by presenting them with sequentially harder problems to elevate their reasoning ability. The rest of Biochemistry is a memory based class that is based on the student’s ability to recall facts. As opposed to simply teaching the facts, I help the student to develop their own faculties of studying, learning, forming mnemonics, time management, and creating a repetition schedule. Organic Chemistry

I have taken organic chemistry 1, organic chemistry 2, and organic chemistry lab, did very well in all courses and reviewed some of the concepts from organic chemistry as a former medical student. I have also tutored organic chemistry to undergraduate students and tutored organic chemistry to students studying for the MCAT. Organic chemistry can be broken down into mastering the nomenclature, mastering the general reactions, and applying these reactions to problems. I teach the student to understand the fundamentals of organic chemistry and establish a good system of memorization to make their studying more efficient. Physical science is both a conceptual and memory based course. The conceptual portion requires the student to understand and be able to work through a variety of different problems. The memorization portion is taught by helping the student to establish their own system of organizing and classifying the information in a way that works for them. Chess

I have been playing chess on and off for about 10 years. Although I do not have a formal FIDE rating I play on Chess.com with other competitive players. I am familiar with basic openings and defenses and how the game unfolds into the three stages of beginning, middle, and endgame. I also occasionally play with a a person who was a few points shy of 2,200, which means he is just shy of being a chess master. I really enjoy the game and am very qualified to teach a basic to intermediate level well.

I enjoy guiding students to discover and gain efficiency in their own learning style.

MCAT

MCAT

I have taken the MCAT and am a former medical student at Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. I have experience tutoring the MCAT and can help a person design a "structure" for approaching the MCAT. It begins with using good review materials, which can change depending on your level of understanding. I tutor the MCAT by getting a student set up with review materials and have them go through it on their own time and help them cultivate self-discipline. As the student accumulates questions or gets stuck on concepts, the student submit me a list of questions and topics they would like clarification on. I then design a lecture on this material and guide you through your sticking points. This keeps it efficient, I am only tutoring you what you need to know and not wasting your time teaching you things you already know. The MCAT takes a LOT of work. I have personally elevated my score by 7 points and anyone else can do the same or more! But it takes WORK.

Very Happy

Will is helping my son with his high school Honors Chemistry. We have only had two sessions so far, but my son is getting a lot from it and feeling better about a class that has been hard for him. My son was hesitant to have a tutor and Will had a very good approach with him which was no pressure and a lot of encouragement. My son is now very willing and is appreciative of the help.

Confidence building 202

After bombing my first 2 tests, I was seriously considering dropping out of the class. Thanks for helping me stick it out, and giving me the knowledge that even if I flunk, i'll have given it my best shot.

Enthusiastic and knowledgeable

Will made great use of the hour we had. Prepared, efficient, friendly, excited about sharing his study techniques. I just started implementing some of his suggestions today and already feel more confident about my learning. Thanks Will for your help!

Invaluable help to our three children

This is a comment from a grateful parent, I will have my children follow up with their own insights. We have triplets, Will is willing and able to tackle any subject the kids need at a moment's notice. He is brilliant, he can tutor AP Physics, Chem, Trig, Algebra II any subject with patience and humor and engage the kids on their level in a way that makes the material attainable and enjoyable as well...he is exceptional. He is incredibly flexible, as well, if one kid has an upcoming test, he will happily meet any of the kids for any subject...which is incredibly kind and very accommodating to our fluid schedules...and academic needs. He is exceptional!!!

Great tutor

Will put my daughter's mind at ease. He prepped her for her first test focusing on the areas where she felt challenged. Will is very knowledgeable and has a way of explaining the physics process which is student friendly. My daughter really likes his teaching style.

Super knowledgable.

Really helped with my physiology. Works at a good speed. Helps explain concepts in away that helps you really understand them.

Patient and intuitive

William made a great connection with our son. This allowed him to tutor in a way that our son could learn best. While our son may complain about doing homework during the summer, he's proud that he's ahead of the curve for his grade. We are very pleased with William.

An exceptional teacher

Will has been working with our teenage son twice-weekly for over a year now, and I wanted to update my review to reflect the amazing job he has done for our family. Will is a brilliant teacher, able to break complicated subjects down into simple terms and communicate them with patience and clarity. We pay him a half-hour for lesson preparation, since he is guiding our 8th grade son through an advanced course of study in science and math, and he never fails to use this time well. He brings in experiments, well-thought-through lesson plans, and takes time to go over and grade every assignment our son completes, making sure to go over and problems that gave him trouble. Will is also a gem of a human, with a strong ethical sense. He looks at our bright, complex, and talkative home-study student as a chance to grow in patience and teaching skills. Having Will on board as a tutor, I feel assured that my son is getting a stellar background in math and science, with an emphasis on the fun of learning. Our independent study choice would not be nearly as successful without him. I give him my highest recommendation.
