About Laurel

Bio

I have been tutoring one-on-one since my undergraduate days. At the university I tutored computer science to foreign students and a blind student. Due to my approach, my fellow tutors were not aware that he was indeed blind, until it was discussed in a staff meeting.

In my career as an IT manager, I tutored computer users, also on a one-on-one basis on the software used at each particular company. I have also tutored friends and family, which is much harder.

I have been tutoring, off...

I have been tutoring, off and on for over 25 years.
I have taught colleagues the basics of how to use Microsoft Office programs like Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook
I have been working with PCs, the Internet, printers, etc for almost 30 years.

History is a passion of mine and I enjoy sharing that passion.

Elementary Education

Reading,

Reading

I love to read. It is a passion that I got from my father, whom I never knew to not be engrossed in a book. I am the same. I am always have at least one book on my nightstand, and more often it is two. If I am not reading a book, I am exploring the Internet reading news articles or just researching something that caught my interest.
Study Skills

Study Skills

One of the first things I ask a student (depending on age of course) is how they learn best, i.e., listening, hands on, reading, etc. I then adjust my teaching style accordingly. I can help understanding the importance of note taking, scheduling study break time, finding a good location for studying, organizing course work, etc. I also find the PQRST (Preview, Question, Read, Summary, Test) works very well. Also giving analogies of everyday things can create pictures in the students mind that can help learning.

English

English,

English

I was fortunate to have a wonderful English teacher who taught me skills that served me well through Grad school. I am very patient and adjust my teaching style to match the student's learning style. I also like to use lots of "real world" analogies to explain concepts.

History

American History,

American History

I LOVE History. It is a passion of mine. Most of the books in my personal library are about historical figures, eras or events. One thing I find particularly fascinating are the historic events taking place in one part of the world while others are happening in another. For example: Mozart was writing his wonderful music at the same time America was fighting her war for Independence and writing the Constitution.
World History,

World History

I have a passion for history. I view history as a intertwined group of events, people, culture, etc. History is a fluid sequence of events and people that, throughout the ages, have evolved into the events taking shape today. I continually find it fascinating how a small decision made 500 years ago has evolved into something that is so common today it isn't given a second thought. I can bring that passion to you.

Cooking

I love to cook and bake. If you want to learn how to create wonderful and delicious meals, you have come to the right place. I make cooking fun. At all family functions, I am asked to either bake a cake or bread. But I also love to cook all kinds of dishes, mains, sides, desserts. I am one of five kids and cooked my first meal in the 4th grade. Of course Mom helped but I was in the kitchen doing it. Since then I have been in the kitchen. I have also written three cook books: "My Mother's Kitchen", "Thirty-one Days of Soup", and "Another Giant Zucchini?". I have three more books in development and am collecting my mom's meatball recipes for her to publish.

Microsoft Office

I just had my lesson with Laurel, I was very happy and looking forward to continuing my lessons. She was on time, patient, knowledgeable. I am looking forward to getting into Excel.

Laurel is a very helpful tutor

Laurel really helped me getting the background about history from the textbook I read. What I liked about Laurel tutoring is that she makes it into a story and once she tells you the background of it and you reread the text you really get the whole picture of the text.

Very kind woman

Laurel was exceptionally friendly and not once made me feel uncomfortable or pressured, even over the phone. She did not know as much about economics as my teacher, but in the process of explaining things to her and reading the textbook together, it helped me better understand the subject. All in all, it was a positive experience and helped me study for a big test tomorrow.

Microsoft Excel 2013 Lesson

Laurel is a very patient & knowledgeable tutor. I very happy I'm working with her. We worked on entering data, inserting rows, formatting cells, using the different formulas. I feel a lot more confident about working with Excel after meeting with Laurel. She has a way on how to explain things so I can understand Excel. Thanks Laurel
