ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

While enjoying my work with students, I've taken classes which have taught me techniques to help those who struggle with English as their second language (or English Language Learners). I utilize real life situations and multiple modalities (verbal and written words, drawings, objects, pantomime, and English grammar rules) to transfer meanings to students. As they learn and improve their skills, we have fun with each new challenge. Trust my methods that are calm, interactive, encouraging, and very effective.
Hebrew,

Hebrew

I was the Director of Religious School at a local synagogue and taught the 4/5th grade class. While teaching biblical Hebrew, I focused on phonetic deciphering of prayers (and melodies) found in the prayer book, as well as the general meaning of those prayers. I also used basic classroom vocabulary, mixed with those from the prayers that the students are learning, while speaking to the students. I use proven fluency and syllabication techniques that are both successful and fun! My goal in teaching Hebrew is to have students become more comfortable with all parts of the Shabbat and festival services, and be challenged and pleased with their progress.

Elementary Math

While having many years of practical experience teaching all levels of elementary math, I have also taken specialized classes which have given me valuable techniques. This has and will enable me to help students with memory, developing relationships and meaning, understanding of concepts, categorizing, and the understanding of the flow of math order and techniques. It is so very important for our young students to develop and understand the basics. this will really benefit them with in math in their futures. Math was always a struggle for me while learning the basics, so now since I've learned various creative ways to teach it, the subject has become fun and a joy. I love seeing children's faces light up as they 'get it' and are really successful! Their self-esteem increases and resistance to school slips away!
Homeschool,

Homeschool

Home schooling is an amazing situation for many students to learn and be taught in ways that are most successful for them. It allows for more creativity, individualized activities/lessons, and support. I have been working with students in this situation for many years and really appreciate the flexibility and degree of high quality education available to them. My specialties include English, math, study skills (test taking, organization, time management, resources, and remedial support), and of course project based learning. Please let me know what your needs are for a single student or a small group.
Phonics,

Phonics

I have a vast knowledge, various techniques, and experience for teaching phonics to all ages. In the past few years I've been trained in (and used): Nanci Bell’s Visualizing and Verbalizing, Seeing Stars, and the Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Program [LiPS]. I sometimes combine the best components from these to suit each individual student. Other times, the best course of action is to keep the individual program clean and fresh. I stress the knowledge and use of sound/symbol/tactile awareness, and then introduce more and new information as the student is ready. Moving at the speed that the pupil is prepared for is essential for their long term memory to become established. As this happens, we build upon prior knowledge and continue toward fluent reading and comprehension. Please contact me with any questions that you have and to tell me about your needs.

Depending upon the student's age and knowledge, I use a variety of strategies. They include: story starters, mad libs, prompts, brain storming, various organizational diagrams, teaching the structure of writing an introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, and conclusion. If the student has a project that they are needing support with, we will always begin with that, and then re-direct our attention on the more basic paragraph concepts. I teach how to write in all four styles: descriptive, narrative, expository, and persuasive. My philosophy is to begin from wherever the student is at present time. Teaching writing is really an enjoyable task, and I love working with students between grade 2 through adult.

As a California teacher with 2 credentials, I passed the CBEST the first time I took it, and with 'flying colors'. I teach how to outline for the essay and what kinds of details to include in their paragraphs, learning math formulas, clues in grammar, and how to pick out the meaning and details in a passage. I have a positive attitude, and a light sense of humor. Students need constructive feedback, positive reinforcement, creativity, tricks, and an organized way to reach their goal. I guide them through what could be a very daunting process toward success!

I like how she taught me and I learned very good pronunciation. She is patient and funny. I recommend her to everybody that wants to improve how to speak with the right pronunciation.

I have passed the C-BEST with her.

I have increased 10 points in the C-BEST writing exam and finally have passes it with her! She is the best teacher that helps you to pass this exam. She explains the usage of articles and prepositions in detail. Moreover, she can explain the slight differences of similar words. She knows the clear criteria of the exam. I feel sure that she will provide you with qualified lessons. She will consider your essays with a warm heart, together.

Excellent tutor!

Pnina is absolutely amazing! I have been working with her to study for the Cbest and she is a great teacher! She explains concepts well and she has helped me grow my confidence for the test. I struggle with math and she really helped me through it, and I understand much more now then I thought I would after working with her! She is also incredibly patient. Thank you so much Pnina!

Great

Our first lesson with Pnina was great. She hit it off with my 8 year old son and seemed to read him very accurately. She was patient and had skills to manage his inattentiveness, keeping him on track without him even realizing it. I'm looking forward to what we will accomplish together for my son.
