I sought Pnina’s tutoring services in the Fall of 2013 because my daughter, who recently turned 9, was struggling academically. My daughter has been working with Pnina for about two months now and already I hear improvement in her reading ability, articulation, pronunciation and has increased her ability to hear and write sounds. My daughter also gets speech therapy from school in a group setting but it's the one on one with Pnina where my wife and I have notice the largest growth in just a short period of time. We do get homework after every session but my daughter is enthusiastic to complete it to show her progress to Pnina. She still has a way to go but I'm confident with Pnina's help my daughter will get the reading confidence she deserves. One last thing is Pnina is extremely patient with my daughter who suffers from sensory processing disorder and is easily distracted.

Update 3-11-13: My son took the SAT last weekend and feels he did very well. He was able to answer all questions in all sections. In particular, he is confident he wrote a great essay response, with good structure, supporting examples, and conclusion. This is thanks to Pnina's tutoring as he was weak in the written section of the PSAT last Fall. Pnina's tutoring really paid off for him.

We have only had about 8 lessons for my 4 yr old so far, but I've been generally pleased with the level of progress I have seen this far. She is very patient with my 4 yr old and they seem to have a good working relationship. My daughter looks forward to her lessons and seems excited about learning new things. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have teaching experience, working with people who have ADD or ADHD for over 15 years in standard classes, and have taken Special Ed. classes while working toward that credential. As a California teacher with 2 credentials, I passed the CBEST the first time I took it, and with 'flying colors'. My strategies for teaching students to pass this test include using practice tests (one at a time), correcting it, and focusing on the areas that the person is the weakest. I teach how to outline for the essay and what kinds of details to include in their paragraphs, learning math formulas, clues in grammar, and how to pick out the meaning and details in a passage. I have a positive attitude, and a light sense of humor. Students need constructive feedback, positive reinforcement, creativity, tricks, and an organized way to reach their goal. I guide them through what could be a very daunting process toward success!

I have been trained in the following programs: Nanci Bell’s Visualizing and Verbalizing, Seeing Stars, and the Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Program [LiPS]. By using these and other programs, and having the flexibility to incorporate my experience and education, I have been very successful in working with those who struggle with Dyslexia. There are also technological advances such as speech to print software and that which will read aloud to you that may be vital for success. It all depends upon what each student's needs are and what works best in each situation. To support each student, I use a combination of creativity, proven programs, training, patience, and above all, acceptance of what each person's strengths and weaknesses are. Since I've taught students in all grade from 1 through 12 for over 25 years, I am well versed in all areas of: health science, earth science, physical science, the scientific method. While having many years of practical experience teaching all levels of elementary math, I have also taken specialized classes which have given me valuable techniques. This has and will enable me to help students with memory, developing relationships and meaning, understanding of concepts, categorizing, and the understanding of the flow of math order and techniques. It is so very important for our young students to develop and understand the basics. this will really benefit them with in math in their futures.
Math was always a struggle for me while learning the basics, so now since I've learned various creative ways to teach it, the subject has become fun and a joy. I love seeing children's faces light up as they 'get it' and are really successful! Their self-esteem increases and resistance to school slips away!

While enjoying my work with students, I've taken classes which have taught me techniques to help those who struggle with English as their second language (or English Language Learners). I utilize real life situations and multiple modalities (verbal and written words, drawings, objects, pantomime, and English grammar rules) to transfer meanings to students. As they learn and improve their skills, we have fun with each new challenge. Trust my methods that are calm, interactive, encouraging, and very effective.
I am the Director of Religious School at a local synagogue and teach the 4/5th grade class. While teaching biblical Hebrew, I focus on phonetic deciphering of prayers (and melodies) found in the prayer book, as well as general meaning of those prayers. I also use basic classroom vocabulary, mixed with those from the prayers that the students are learning, while speaking to the students. I use proven fluency and syllabication techniques that are both successful and fun! My goal in teaching Hebrew is to have students become more comfortable with all parts of the Shabbat and festival services, and be challenged and pleased with their progress.

I have taught math from simple number concepts through Algebra for many years, and incorporate a logical and sequencial approach. While using texts, I also bring real life materials and concepts into the mix as well. I make learning math very accessible and even fun. Students feel rewarded, rejuvenated, and ready for more challenges. I have loved creating and altering clothing for many years (since middle school). From my experiences designing and constructing costumes for high school plays, to teaching students at a youth club, my creativity and patience have proved successful! Study skills incorporates many areas including understanding and remembering main points in a paragraph, chapter, book, story, or essay. This may mean highlighting, taking notes, and or discussing orally. Utilizing one of the many outline formats or Cornell Notes helps to organize information and thoughts. Record keeping is very important for students to be able to keep on schedule with all assignments and learn what he or she can do independently, or where they need help. We will find the 'map' technique that fits your child's way of thinking to organize and create writing success.
Learning and practicing various forms of study skills is the basis for a successful education and professional career.
Depending upon the student's age and knowledge, I use a variety of strategies. They include: story starters, mad libs, prompts, brain storming, various organizational diagrams, teaching the structure of writing an introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, and conclusion. If the student has a project that they are needing support with, we will always begin with that, and then re-direct our attention on the more basic paragraph concepts. I teach how to write in all four styles: descriptive, narrative, expository, and persuasive. My philosophy is to begin from wherever the student is at present time. Teaching writing is really an enjoyable task, and I love working with students between grade 2 through adult.
