About Meg

I just moved to Santa Monica this past June and I am looking forward to starting my new job working at a private school in Sherman Oaks as a 5th grade teacher. I moved from NYC where I was a Co-Head Teacher for ages 4 and 5 at The Epsicopal School in New York City. Before becoming a Co-Head Teacher, I was an Assistant Teacher for two years in with 5 and 6 year olds. Prior to that, I worked with 4th and 5th graders at City and Country School in NYC. I graduated from Bankstreet College of Education in May 2012 and spent a full year as a Student Teacher at City and Country before being offered a teaching position there. Over the years I have worked with many students of various ages in and out of the classroom.

As a tutor, I strive to create an environment where students individual needs are met. I am dedicated to building and/or having students maintain confidence in themselves and interest/excitement in the material.
I believe building a strong rapport with my students and making learning fun and meaningful creates an opportunity for success.

I believe and have learned through experience teaching that each student has different needs - socially, emotionally, and intellectually. Students learn in different ways and I am dedicated to finding which strategy or style works best. I value the process not just the product - and strive to make tutoring sessions, activities, lessons, etc. meaningful and fun. Something students can relate to and apply to many situations.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I just accepted a job to teach 5th grade at a private school in Sherman Oaks, CA. Prior to this upcoming school year - I was a Co-Head Teacher for Group 6 (4 and 5 year olds) at a private school in New York City. Before becoming a Co-Head Teacher, I was an Assistant Teacher for two years in Group 8 (5 and 6 year olds). Prior to working at the school in NYC, I was 4th and 5th grade Assistant Teacher at another private school in NYC. I graduated from Bankstreet College of Education in May 2012 and spent a full year as a Student Teacher in NY before being offered a teaching position there. I was provisionally certified in Ohio (Pre-K-3rd grade) and NY (1-6th upon completing my Masters program).

Elementary (K-6th)

I graduated from a Masters program at Bank Street College of Education in NYC in May 2012. There I focused on Curriculum and Instruction, earning a M.S. in Childhood Education. During my studies and through my experiences with teaching, I have learned to understand the common core standards and tailor my instruction according to my students' needs.

Handwriting

I have taught handwriting using the Handwriting Without Tears program with ages 5 - 10 year olds. During my experience with 4/5/6 year olds - I have realized the importance of building fine-motor skills through the use of small manipulatives, cutting activities, using small "pip squeak" markers, etc. Additionally, breaking down the letters and focusing on straight shaped letters then introducing letters with curves.

Phonics

I have had a variety of experiences teaching children ages 4 - 1st grade. This age is extremely important in terms of phonics. I have introduced several activities to students that build on pre-literacy skills, sequencing, and phonics. Additionally, I believe in building and eliciting language through interesting/fun games and activities.

Study Skills

I have several years of experience teaching and tutoring many different ages ranging from 5 year olds to 5th graders. I believe in order for students to feel confident, they need to have an understanding of how to organize their work, thoughts, and information. I think in order to do this, one must truly understand the information at hand, and in turn, figure out the most important points to focus on so they are using their time efficiently.
