Bio

I love helping students solve problems, and English and writing is a problem solving business.

I've been in this problem solving business for a while, both as a professional writer and editor and an English teacher at Santa Monica College, where I teach composition and critical thinking. Prior to SMC, I worked as an English resource specialist in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

I'm extraordinarily patient and friendly, and I use creative approaches to help students become better...

I'm extraordinarily patient and friendly, and I use creative approaches to help students become better readers and writers. As one student wrote, “Helpful, interesting and fun class. His lectures are crystal clear. Highly recommend because your reading and writing skills will absolutely change for the better.”

For individuals who need more than basic writing tutoring, I have served as editorial director of a well-regarded literary agency, Keller Media, for ten years, where I helped hundreds of authors realize their publishing dreams.

I communicate clear and effective approaches to both reading comprehension and writing, breaking lessons down into simple and manageable concepts.

While I am flexible with cancellations, I do appreciate a 24-hour cancellation. I live in the Santa Monica area, and I'm willing to travel up to fifteen miles to reach you. If you are remote, we can discuss other options.

I'm extremely patient, committed to your success and known for making learning fun. Please feel free to contact me with questions.

Special Needs

I worked for five years as a special education teacher in a Los Angeles middle school (English resource teacher), primarily working with students who had mild to moderate disabilities. I worked with, taught, tutored, tested, wrote IEPs and guided hundreds of special needs students through their middle school years. I also worked extensively with an educational therapist who referred many private special needs student to me as a tutor. As a Santa Monica College English instructor, I work mostly with the basic skills population, with classrooms frequently populated with students who have learning disabilities. This said, I have many years of experience instructing this specific population of learners.
