Welcome potential students! If you need a dedicated, patient, and highly-qualified tutor, try me! I've spent 30+ yrs. successfully teaching and tutoring. My primary tutoring goals are to help you develop confidence, achieve your academic objectives, and have a good time while doing so.
My background includes a B.A. from UCLA with a major in English. I've been published in local magazines and have a Lifetime Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential. I've taught in four schools in the Los Angeles area. Since I've taught and tutored every grade from K through six, I have a strong background in all elementary subjects. I have experience teaching struggling students as well as gifted and talented children. I've also received PTA teaching awards twice in my tenure as a classroom teacher. Currently I enjoy tutoring on a part-time basis. I've been successful teaching and tutoring mathematics, phonics, reading comprehension, writing, spelling, punctuation, and grammar, and I can help with homework.
However, I'm not limited to teaching Elementary School (K-5). I'm also excellent at teaching reading, writing, and English at ALL levels, including high school, college, and beyond. I've scored in the top 10% of test takers and can assist you with test preparation in SAT Reading, SAT writing, ACT English, ACT Reading, and Lower Level ISEE. I can help you review, analyze, and polish your stories and essays whether you're primary level to high school, college, or beyond.
I often begin by assessing your skills (or your child's) so we'll know exactly what we need to accomplish. My tutoring lessons are custom-tailored to your needs and utilize multiple teaching modalities. I provide periodic reports and assessments and adjust our lessons accordingly. You'll find I'm well-prepared, punctual, patient, thorough, and that I have a sense of humor. I believe in cultivating a great tutor/student relationship, and I try to make our lessons enjoyable.
I offer the option of meeting for private lessons at one of the study rooms at the main Santa Monica Library where I offer a $5/hr discount for lessons. However, I also travel to other locations. In addition, I am now tutoring online for grades 2 and up, and I have experience teaching home school.
When I'm not tutoring, I enjoy my two dogs, walking adventure groups, reading, taking classes myself, and all kinds of art.
I believe everyone has talents they bring to the table. I'm eager to meet you and help you utilize your talents to feel confident and enjoy success in meeting your goals! Welcome potential students! Receiving tutoring from Nancy has exceeded my expectations. Her services do not stop with offering your child qualified tutoring. She provides weekly write ups on progress which is helpful for busy parents to keep up to date. Our situation is a rather challenging one and Nancy has been able to connect and gain the respect of our child to ensure that his weekly lessons are positive and beneficial. You won't be disappointed. Thank you Nancy....
That's lovely Miki. I know you're especially busy right now, and I appreciate the time you took to write this gracious testimonial.

We are very pleased with Nancy and the progress our child has made and our child loves Nancy.
The two have been working together since the end of the last school year (2nd grade) where core math posed a big challenge. She scored 80% on her first test in the 3rd grade and her confidence level has definitely increased! We are all very pleased.
Thank you Hortensia! I enjoy working with your child and with the family.
Miss Nancy is a great, well experienced tutor. She knows how to communicate with a young kid. She has helped my son to improve his Academy performance. I am so glad I can have her teaching my son.
Thank you Ann. I enjoy working with your son!
Nancy is extremely positive, organized, and professional. You can tell she loves to teach and genuinely wants to help my son. I am positive she will make a big difference in my son's academic life.
Thank you Betsy!
Ms Nancy J. was just what I needed to prep up for the SAT. She was patient, helpful, kind, and gave me more than I needed! Thank you so much!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I've always scored in the 99th percentile on tests of my English skills. That, and my English major in college and my extensive teaching experience in verbal skills, makes me very qualified to tutor students in this subject area.
Reading Comprehension has always been one of my top skills. I've consistently scored in the top tier of reading tests, including the ACT. I also really enjoy learning new material. Reading, including good comprehension, is the gateway to all learning.
I have a Lifetime Standard Elementary Credential & a B.A. in English Literature from UCLA. I've completed 27 years of teaching in elementary school and approximately four years of private tutoring. My experience is in every grade from K to six.
I hold a Lifetime Standard Teaching Credential. I've taught mathematics for 27 years to students in every grade from 1 to 6 as well as tutoring students for four years in mathematics. I also successfully prepared my students to pass standardized tests given through LAUSD each of those years.
I was an undergraduate English major at UCLA. I've also done some writing for local magazines. I've been told my submissions do not need editing. I'm the person friends and colleagues come to when they want to check whether their grammar is correct. Those skills and my experience teaching grades one through six, and tutoring students from k through adult, have honed my innate talent for the written word. I can help you succeed in Language Arts!
As an undergraduate English major, I did a lot of writing. I've also done some freelance writing for magazines. I have a lot of experience teaching grammar, and I am strong at revising both grammar and style in essays from elementary to college levels.
I was an English literature major in college and I'm a voracious reader...always have been. I enjoy sharing literature with my students.
I hold a Lifetime Standard Teaching Credential which I've utilized in teaching reading as well as other subjects. I taught first grade for four years and second grade for nine years. Both grades require teaching phonics. In my 27 years teaching for LAUSD, I taught a number of different reading styles, but all included teaching phonics.
Teachers proofread everyday. I also proofread all my submissions prior to sending them to magazines. I've always been very observant when it comes to copy editing.
I've loved reading ever since my first reading lesson. I read a lot back then, and still do. I'm highly experienced and skilled at teaching reading via multiple modalities. Whether your need be phonics, language experience, grammar, or comprehension, I can help you. Since I've taught reading at every grade level from K through 6th, I've had abundant experience in helping others learn to love reading as well!
I hold a Standard Lifetime Teaching Credential. Language Arts has always been my forte, and I've always scored in the 99th percentile on assessments of language ability. My ability to impart learning is bolstered by 27 years of teaching experience with LAUSD and three years of private tutoring experience. I am up-to-date on the latest changes for the 2016 SAT!
As an undergraduate English major, I successfully wrote many essays. I've also had some articles published in magazines and was told my submissions needed no editing. I have 30 years of experience teaching writing skills to others, and I enjoy doing so!
I've always been a natural speller. However, I know that not everyone is, so I know the rules. I've had plenty of practice teaching them during my 27 years of classroom teaching for LAUSD. There are a lot of activities that can make spelling fun as well, and I try to incorporate them when I tutor. Having a great vocabulary helps develop spelling skills. Because I've always read a lot, my vocabulary is excellent!
I taught 1st through 6th grades for LAUSD for 27 years as well as several years spent tutoring students privately. Study skills are essential for mastery of elementary school subjects. I successfully prepared many students for standardized tests both during the school year and at year end.
When I was young, I used my dictionary a lot looking up words I encountered while reading. I think that practice built a solid foundation in vocabulary. I am well known as a teacher for helping my students build a robust vocabulary.
I enjoy writing, and I certainly had plenty of practice writing essays as an English major in college. I've also had articles published in magazines (Los Angeles Magazine and San Fernando Valley Magazine). I'm told my writing does not need editing. Since I've taught every grade from K through 6, I've had experience teaching writing beginning with the basics and building from there.
