I developed a passion for tutoring in undergrad, where I spent more than two years as a peer tutor in finance and accounting through my alma mater's tutoring center. After graduation (University of Puget Sound, BA in International Political Economy, summa cum laude), I worked in the investment banking and private equity industries in San Francisco and New York City. During this time I continued to work with students who were interested in similar careers to help them hone technical skills and prepare for interviews. My liberal arts background gives me expertise in a variety of subjects while my work experience gives me a deep mastery of finance and accounting technical concepts.
Some of the concepts I tutor in don't always come naturally to students, but I have substantial experience in relating the concepts covered to other subjects and ideas. I also ensure that students always understand the place of each concept in the "big picture". This allows my students to gain an understanding and appreciation for the subject and hopefully even become passionate about it as well. I needed some help with an Excel project in Economics and Tristan was phenomenal. This was my first time using WyzAnt tutor service and Tristan was a great reflection on the company. He responded very quickly to my post, was early for our session, and very knowledgeable about the subject matter. He was polite and straightforward in his method, and most importantly, I learned what I needed to in a short amount of time. I would recommend Tristan on the highest level to anyone.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
