About Judy

Hello Parents and Students:

I have had the opportunity to tutor students from the elementary school to the college level and, irrespective of age or background, I have come to the same conclusions. A student can learn nearly any subject so long as there is someone willing to teach them in a way that grasps their attention.

In class sizes that average anywhere between 20-35 students, one can be certain that a teacher will uniformly deliver materials in a way that suits perhaps the majority of students. Unfortunately for the small minority, they are left behind to deal with dwindling grades and even worse, diminishing self-esteem. Less talked about are the majority that end up developing a false sense of security because they are able to "get by" through cramming and rote memorization. They may pass the exams and earn the grades but down the road they often find themselves hitting mental road blocks in subjects that they never took the time to set a sturdy foundation.

This is where my passion for tutoring comes to light. I believe it is critical for students to develop a strong academic foundation that will provide them with the tools to succeed regardless of the subject matter or who is teaching it. I make it my aim to address the learning needs of each student and teach in a manner that encourages them to realize their abilities and utilize study skills in future learning.

While working toward my bachelor's degree in biology, I was employed as an academic specialist and peer counselor for entering and continuing college students. I developed curriculum that helped struggling students explore multiple learning methods unique to their individual needs. The students I worked with increased their GPAs appreciably and improved by at least one letter grade on average. I would like to continue to assist in students' academic success. I have a strong academic background in biology and psychology, and believe that in applying my combination of compassion, experience and knowledge, I can create a fun and beneficial learning experience for your student.

My experience in tutoring extends over 10+ years and has encompassed subjects in mathematics, advanced sciences, and study skills. Specifically, my subjects include AP Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Physiology, Anatomy, Geometry, Algebra I and II and basic mathematics.

In that time, I have had the opportunity to work with students ranging from elementary school through the university level in both group and one-on-one settings. Tutoring continues to serve as a rewarding experience for me. I strive to help students enjoy learning in order to build the confidence needed to achieve their full academic potential.

I hope to hear from you soon!

Sincerely,
Judy

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Oxford Tutoring- Academic Specialist

Taught After-school K-8Math/English program in classroom of 20 students.

Taught 9th-12th grade math (Algebra I/II-Trigonometry) in one-on-one setting.

Developed lesson plans adapted towards the individual learning needs of each student.

Provided academic support to disadvantaged students facing academic difficulty in middle school mathematics through a collaboration between Riverside Unified School District and Oxford Tutoring Center.

Offered academic instruction to students receiving foster youth services.

Documented all tutoring activities such as attendance, students’ development.

Biology

I received my Bachelor's Degree in Biology and have taught AP Biology, Biology I and Biology II at the high school and college levels. Additionally, my medical background calls for me to apply my knowledge in biology on a regular basis in both the clinical and research settings. I have helped many students master the material by creatively demystifying fundamental concepts and improving memorization technique.

Physiology

I currently work in medicine and have extensive expert knowledge in physiology and anatomy. I have tutored the subject for over 4+ years and have helped students organize and remember information that make this course a challenge for most.

Truly understanding the physics and chemistry behind physiology is a major factor in the ease of the course. I focus on teaching core concepts so students have the tools to deduce smaller yet equally important details.

Prealgebra

I served as a math tutor at the Oxford tutoring center. There I worked with children from the ages of 10-18 years old on study skill building, homework help, test preparation in the following subjects: Prealgebra, Algebra, Geometry, Biology, Grammar, and Writing.

All of my students improved by at least one letter grade and reported 100% satisfaction with my tutoring style and personalized lesson planning.

Study Skills

In efforts to prepare students for their academic subjects, I approach developing study skills by explaining the difference between active learning and homework completion. We cover speed reading through the material, filtering for the main idea and effective note taking. Perhaps the most important aspect of this technique is building each of these skills upon the foundations of strong organizational and time management skills. Students will learn how to create a study plan that works best for them per subject and use these transferable skills not only in academics but other life aspects as well.
