About Mark

Bio: Hi, I'm Mark. I am a Harvard graduate and I've been tutoring and coaching for more than ten years. At Harvard I studied history and English literature. I have earned perfect scores of 800 on SAT Math and 800 on SAT Verbal (not on the same test), a 170 on the LSAT and a 770 on the GMAT. I've also built a six-figure business and worked with other clients to build their businesses. I like to teach by imparting ways of thinking that leave those I work with not only prepared to do well on tests, in classes, or in their careers, but also prepared to meet the broader challenges of life.

Background: Between tutoring sessions, I've worked as an actor, a historian, a journalist, a hedge fund trader, an entrepreneur, a paralegal, a salesman, a swimming instructor and a ski instructor.

Test Prep: I am currently tutoring students in the ACT, SAT, GMAT and GRE. I have deep expertise working with more than fifty students in the past year on those four tests (GMAT, GRE, ACT, SAT) alone. I also recently took the new SAT in May 2016 and earned scores of 800 on the Verbal, 730 on the Math, and 8s on all three Essay subsections. I also tutor the LSAT and ISEE.

Writing, Essays & Admissions: I'm a published writer with a byline in the Washington Post and other publications. I partner with students; go really deep on their background and challenges; and then help them to understand, create and craft their personal story and brand with multiple essays and resume so that schools are excited and competing to enroll them. My students have gained admission to Columbia, Cornell and Northwestern in the last year alone. I can help you craft the best application package for college or post graduate admission. I work with everyone from middle-schoolers to mid-career fellowship applicants.

Business: I'm a business coach and creator of the Sell From Story Method. I work with clients to build their own businesses and to increase sales in existing businesses by crafting a story and brand that helps them increase visibility and attract more clients. I also specialize in strategy and financial planning, and I help mid-career professionals to network and land their dream job.

Academics: I have experience tutoring Spanish, French, history, English (reading and writing), math, science, economics, accounting, calculus and finance.

I'd love to help you improve your test scores, get top marks in your classes, find the perfect job, build your ideal business or sharpen your prose skills. I'm happy to provide references, and I have space to work with two or three more students right now, so please contact me to schedule a free consultation. Thanks! Mark

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I went to the Illinois Math and Science Academy, scored 800 on SAT Math and SAT II Math, and scored 770 overall on the GMAT.

Business

I worked at a family office in New York for a year and a half as an analyst. I worked for one year at UBS in Singapore as a credit salesman. I worked for on year at Capstone in New York as a hedge fund equity derivatives trader. I also have extensive entrepreneurial experience.

Career Development

I've been doing career / life coaching for the past six years. Personally, I've worked in law, finance, teaching, film, international business, marketing, and technology. I've made many career changes and learned how to network effectively. I know how to teach these skills and how to help position people for early career opportunities or mid career changes.

For example, I worked a student who I coached through the process of building a resume, finding opportunities, networking and interviewing. I speak with him before all his major interviews and coach him on how to approach them. Last summer he worked for a major media firm in New York and this year he's working in healthcare strategy.

I have many other examples of students who I've coached into successful careers.

College Counseling

I have been working with students as a college counselor for the past six years. I have worked with students in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. I have also worked as an interviewer for the Harvard admissions office. I have a lot of experience working with students to craft essays and resumes, to identify colleges, to prepare for interviews, and to check their applications for completeness. I also work with students to counsel them through their high school experience so they'll be prepared for applications when they become seniors.

English

I minored in English literature at Harvard and I am currently writing a novel.

Finance

I have worked at a family office as an analyst and programmer; at an investment bank as a sales trader in fixed income; and at a Wall Street hedge fund as an equity derivatives trader. I also did the first two levels of the CFA.

Great tutor! Very knowledgeable in writing!

Mark's extremely helpful in helping me edit my college essays. I talked to him about my ideas and he did a perfect job organizing my thoughts and put them into words. He is very knowledgeable in writing and tried to dig all the details I didn't think of. I recommend him for any applicants who need help with their applications. Thank you!
