I have been both tutoring and teaching English at the college level since 2010. I adore teaching and making connections with students! When I find language that allows them to grasp the subject matter in a new and different way I feel so rewarded :)
My first MA is in Children's Literature and my second is in general literature, and I have taught courses that range from a focus on grammar to a survey of Ethnic Children's Literature. My tutoring experience has largely been based around grammar usage, spelling, writing and proofreading essays, learning public speaking skills, understanding novels/poetry and their literary conventions, or increasing vocabulary for SAT/ ACT/GRE prep for students between the ages of 14 and 40. My tutoring strategy focuses on empowering the student in their learning process. Sometimes the anxiety around the subject matter may be bigger than the issue of comprehending the subject matter itself.
I have a strong background in both literature and basic skills, and I want to find a method of communication that shows the student how to understand the material in a low-stress and consistent environment.
I want to meet you where you are (frustrations, confusions, and just plain lack of understanding) and build from there. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
English grammar and vocabulary teacher and tutor at the collegiate, high school, and middle school level for the past 6 years.
As a full-time lecturer, it is my job to keep my students engaged and active while I teach. Similarly, I have tutored high school students on the foundations of public speaking in a series of volunteer debate sessions. I teach them to be a dynamic public speaker through the three foundations of body language, eye contact and voice monitoring.
I have been teaching writing at the college level for the past 6 years as well as tutoring students for grammar, vocabulary, sentence construction and I believe this skill set could strengthen any AP history or English essays.
I have been teaching yoga for ten years and love to add a few stretches in when the student's brain needs a break from the learning process!
