I have studied pre-education at University of Oregon and graduated with BA in English and BA Asian studies.
From the age of 10 I wanted to be a teacher, so I volunteered for everything from helping teachers set up for the school year to cleaning up their classrooms while I was a student. I worked at YMCA as a leader for two years, tutored at the University of Oregon, University of Hawaii, and various other locations. Most students on those programs were from other countries. I lived and worked in Japan for over six years. I first taught on the JET program, which hired English Language teachers. I owned my own language school in Japan for one and half years. I was an aide for kindergarten, first and second grade in Hawaii and Oregon. Most recently, I was a learning coach at Santa Cruz Montessori in Aptos, California for 2nd grade to 8th grade. I worked one on one with kids with several different learning disabilities, and organizational problems. I currently tutor algebra to middle school students and tutor 4-6th grade. I focus on reading and writing skills for k-9th grade. Although I would like to stay within k-9. I have also had experience tutoring at Kirby (subjects Chemistry, History and Writing). I have my post-graduate teaching certificate in TESOL. Also, I help encourage students to develop skills needed for life and future. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
For two years I have worked with students ranging from 4-8th grade on a one and one basis in a Montessori classroom environment. We have repeated lessons together, organizing work and isolation of difficulty. I have used various techniques to break up hard tasks and compartmentalize them to smaller tasks. I will set boundaries and use timers to help build structure. These children have ADHD, cognitive and meta cognitive issues, and many other such as dyslexia.
I have worked at Santa Cruz Montessori in Aptos, California as a learning coach for 2 years. I have experience with grades 4th-8th. I spent an hour 3-days-a-week with each student. I tutored students by using the following methods: I trained them to whisper rather than shouting out; I had them work with a buddy so, they could copy notes later; I taught them to use special phrases to signify they were still thinking; and I helped with transitions from one activity to the next by using visual schedules. Furthermore, I taught students self soothing techniques by squeezing a squishy ball or having students take a break by drinking water.
I have not had any formal training other than local cooking classes and my own cooking and baking adventures in my kitchen. I am well versed in making and following any recipe. Also, I have altered many dishes to meet the needs of my guests. Each year I do themed birthday parties for my sons, usually catering to 100+ guests. I know how to cook Hawaiian, Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, American, Irish, and many other countries cuisine.
I have worked in classrooms in Oregon, Hawaii, California, and Japan. I have focused on art, math, language arts, p.e. and comprehension. I am also a mother of 2 boys (7 and 9). I have helped in their classes from Pre-K-fourth. Furthermore I have recently been a tutor for a Montessori school helping 1st-8th grade with all subjects. I have over 30 years experience in schools and other recreational programs (YMCA).
I have worked as an aide once a week in kindergarten and first grade class for two years. I have taught the correct way of holding a pencil and pencil grip with these children. Also, how to formulate letters. I have taken a calligraphy class and have impeccable lettering I use daily. Several people just from me writing my name and info on forms have asked me if I was a teacher just by my printing.
