UC Berkeley (Master's)
Dear student & parent,
I’ve been a teacher & tutor for decades and helped two kids of my own with their homework. I currently work at a local high school and am ready to help with all math or science primarily, along with other subjects needed. Prep for standardized test include my own years with Kaplan & Princeton Review.
After a master's in physical chemistry at U.C. Berkeley with a minor in math, I completed the four year Ph.D. course & passed my doctorate exams. Duties as a parent intervened as did the economic necessity of teaching college at that time. I have since also taught high school, middle school & elementary grades.
I have found every tutored student to have some different needs that call an individual approach each time. Quoting one parent: "(John) has tutored both of my children in a variety of subjects for the last six years, during high school and continuing on thru college. I can highly recommend him as both knowledgeable, and conscientious. He really enjoys teaching and has a breath of knowledge that is not commonly found in a tutor. He has helped my two young adults (one boy, one girl) in the following subjects: chemistry, biology, physics, US history, algebra, trig, calculus and geometry. He has also been extremely helpful in teaching test taking strategies for the SAT and subject tests. John has practical experience in responding to essay questions, applications and can help synthesize what information is being sought and how best to position your answers. We literally could not have survived the college prep and application process without him." Dear student & parent,

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
With master's degree in chemistry from UC Berkeley & also a chiropractic degree, I taught state college biology, including botany. I had a bit more involvement with the field in teaching nutrition in chiropractic colleges.
I passed the CBEST myself. I have taught and/or tutored the component subjects, including teaching Test-Prep for Kaplan. I have qualified with WyzAnt in the same component subjects, icluding ACT, PSAT, & SAT qualifying tests.
As a Physical Chem grad student at UC Berkeley I was, for a while, the only grad student working with Leo Brewer, Director of the Inorganic materials Research Div at Lawrence Berkeley Lab. I carried out my grad research with the Materials Science & Engineering labs at Lawrence Berkeley Lab, working with Engineering grad students. I also had close collaboration with Frank MacLarnon, Lawrence Lab Budget Director when he worked in Electrochemical Engineering & also worked with Leonard Nanos, then Electrochemical Engineering Division Head at SRI.
I have taught several college Biology courses that included Genetics. I have a Masters in Chemistry from UC Berkeley. I have also been a Chiropractor & taught Medical courses in Chiropractic colleges, again including Physiology, Microbiology & other Genetic content.
I taught Microbiology I, II, & III at Sherman Chiropractic College is Spartanburg, S.C.; Anatomy at Hartnell College & Medical Clinic & Lab at Heald College, both in Salinas. I've taught other Biology & many other Science courses at various academic levels.
I taught Windows & Office programs at New Horizons Computer Learning in Santa Cruz in the past. I worked in various capacities at Day * Night Computer in Santa Cruz, in the past & have long been a power user. I can introduce someone to the subject, but cannot take on the Accountant's task of actually setting up your accounts. I have used Quicken & Quickbooks in my own businesses & personal finances.
