About Eireene

I love writing and I love teaching. A UC Berkeley graduate and a published writer, I strive to help students reawaken their passion for school.

As someone who's taught for over fifteen years at places like Johns Hopkins' Center for Talented Youth, UC Santa Cruz's Creative Writing Program, and the Berkeley Writing Salon, I have many tricks up my sleeve that will help you strategize about improving your work.

I specialize in working with gifted/talented children--that includes high functioning students with Asberger's Syndrome and students with ADHD. I can also help you craft and edit your college application essay or improve your English.

Previous students have gone on to attend top colleges, work for video game companies, and see their stories published in literary magazines.

Even if you're just struggling to get through your literature class, I'll help you remember why it's fun to dream big.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Aspergers

I've worked with students with high-functioning Aspergers at John Hopkins' Center for Talented Youth for over six years. I've received training from Hopkins about strategies for working with students with learning differences.

Cello

I have been playing cello since the sixth grade. I participated in youth and college orchestras and currently play Baroque cello in a chamber orchestra group. Though I have not previously taught cello, I studied with the principal cellist for the Boulder Symphony and am prepared to teach her methods to future students.

Elementary (K-6th)

I've taught writing to fourth and fifth graders at Johns Hopkins' Center for Talented Youth for six years at both the Windward (Los Angeles) and Stanford (Palo Alto) sites. Through Hopkins, I've received excellent training in working with children.

Russian

Greetings:
I'm a heritage speaker of Russian. That is, my relatives spoke with me in Russian when I was young. In addition, I've completed 2 years of Russian at UC Berkeley, lived in Moscow for one year, and spent several recent summers in St. Petersburg, Russia where I worked with a Russian language tutor.

Writing

I'm a professional writer with multiple publications in fiction, poetry, essay and news writing. I have an MFA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State, and have taught creative writing at UC Santa Cruz, The Berkeley Writers' Salon and for Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth. I stay current in my field by attending conferences and readings and my previous students have gone on to write for video game companies, attend MFA programs and earn academic degrees.
