University of Hawaii (Master's)
Hi, hallo, ola! My name is Christina and I've been teaching for 19 years, doing what I love, from instructing German at the University of Hawaii, to teaching ESL in Austria and Brazil, to tutoring Portuguese and K-12 in Hawaii and California. Wherever I go, all around the world, I love helping and connecting with my students.
ESL: I studied and minored in ESL at university and have taught English to all ages, preschool to adult, in Austria and Brazil. I currently tutor many wonderful ESL students from all over the world.
PORTUGUESE: I speak fluent Portuguese, have lived on and off in Brazil since 1994, and possess a certificate in Portuguese language. This is a beautiful language with such flair, which makes it a lot of fun to teach and to learn!
GERMAN: I've lived in Austria and Germany and have a Bachelor’s (2000) and a Master’s (2002) in German from the University of Hawaii. I taught German at the University of Hawaii for 12 years. I continue teaching German courses in Capitola and Santa Cruz. Deutsch ist super! I love teaching it, and have found all the tricks to make it easy and enjoyable to learn.
K-12: I have a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education (2000) from the University of Hawaii, and I've worked as a substitute teacher for all subjects K-12 for the Hawaii Department of Education and now for Santa Cruz area schools. I currently tutor many elementary, middle, and high school students in various subjects, including TMOSS (Time Management, Organization, and Study Skills) and test prep for ACT, SAT, ISEE, CHSPE and SSAT. I recently completed a TMOSS training program, and I love to integrate education on time management, organization, and study skills into my tutoring. Hi, hallo, ola! Christina is excellent! It's clear that her student (my son) will be far better prepared for the college entrance exams due to Christina's skills as an educator. We recommend that you contact Christina for any of your tutoring needs.
I enjoyed this first session with Christina. Thanks to her I improved the presentation of my startup. We reviewed writing, pronunciation and gramma issues.
We are grateful to have found Christina as a tutor for my son. She has tutored him only 5 times and we have noticed tremendous improvement.
She is also VERY flexible when I comes to small schedule changes. Christina also accommodated the place for my son to be tutored.
She is great! I highly recommend her!!!!
Christina is a really fun teacher, she teaches with enthusiasm, and doesn't let her students wander around for a second which is great.
I contacted Christina because I had to prepare for the toefl exam. I had a month to improve radically in my writing and speaking section. From the beginning she organized how we were going to work in each section. She is very organized and has a deep knowledge about what the raters expect about your writing and speaking section so we could focus on that. Besides, she encourages me to improve in a cheerful manner without losing her professionalism and making the class more fun. Also, she is very punctual and when she arrives 2 minutes late she lets me know in advance, definitely very committed with her work. If I had to prepare for other exams I would call her, and of course I would recommend her.
I don't have enough time to speak English here in the U.S., so in the lesson, we focus on conversation. During conversation, she gives me enough opportunities to speak and teaches me lots of useful expressions, proverbs and so forth. And I don't have much info around this area and how to live here, so she gives me lots of good advice and makes me comfortable living here. She understands my goal here and prepares for the lessons and I appreciate that.
Her lesson is very enjoyable and makes me motivated. In addition she is pretty cheerful. One hour lesson passed by like a flash.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a B.Ed in Education from the University of Hawaii (2000). I was a substitute teacher in the Honolulu School District for all grades and subjects for 12 years, 2 days a week. Many assignments were K-6th. I also have been a private tutor for K-6th students in Hawaii, Brazil, and Austria.
I currently tutor wonderful ESL students from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, and Saudi Arabia. Before moving to California, I tutored English full-time in Brazil for 8 months (July 2012 - February 2013). I teach all levels, from beginning to advanced -- in Brazil, many of my students were even studying to take the IELTS or the TOEFL, so we focused on the English skills needed for those tests. However, I teach ESL to all ages and for all purposes, from basic ESL for children to advanced Business English to business people.
I have a Bachelor's in Education and German (University of Hawaii, 2000) and a Master's in German (University of Hawaii, 2002). I taught the first three years of German (101-306) at the University of Hawaii for 11 years.
I've lived in, worked in, and traveled in Brazil for many years. I possess a certificate in professional Portuguese from SENAC, Santos, Brazil. Having had a Brazilian partner and having 2 half-Brazilian children doesn't hurt! Because of my personal and professional ties with Brazil spanning over 2 decades, I speak, read, and write Portuguese with a near-native fluency. I even fool Brazilians! I love the Portuguese language and teaching it to my students. It's a beautiful and passionate language that's so much fun to learn/teach.
I've been proofreading professionally for the past 20+ years for Jordan Valley Heritage House publishing company, as well as for professors, doctors, grad students, and businesses. Highly attentive to detail, I take pride in helping others produce the most perfect finished product possible. I'm available for proofreading work or to teach proofreading to students.
I tutored and substitute taught in special education and special needs classrooms for 12 years for the Hawaii Department of Education. During that time I gained experience working with students with all types of special needs.
I have a Bachelor's in Education with coursework in speech. I have also worked with speech students as a substitute for the Hawaii Department of Education and as a tutor for the past 13 years.
I have a Bachelor's in Education from U.H. (2000), which included coursework in teaching time management and study skills, so I've been helping students in these areas for many years.
In May 2013, I completed a TMOSS (Time Management, Organization, and Study Skills) training program through MLC, so I'm armed with great new methods and materials to help students improve their time management, organization, and study skills.
One of my favorite parts of tutoring English at all levels is the writing component. I ensure that my students are able to communicate in writing as efficiently and skillfully as possible, whether they're practicing essays for the SAT, composing their resume, or writing narratives for their high school English course. I help students break down their writing into easy and digestible sections, so that they become confident in tackling any writing task that's set before them.
