About Reuben

I have been a full time teacher for 9 years now with a California credential and MA degree in Special Education. I have been tutoring since I graduated college in 2005, and I have also been an SAT teacher for the Princeton Review.

I am a graduate of Williams College which is rated as the top liberal arts college in the country. My graduate degree is from San Francisco State University with a 4.0 GPA. I have also previously been awarded the Teacher of the Year award for a County Office of Education.

Areas I specialized in include Math--up to Algebra 2 and Geometry, all levels of reading and writing, college application and admissions, and the SAT exam.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

CBEST

I am a credentialed CA teacher. I started off as a substitute teacher and had to take the CBEST exam. I passed it on the first try. I have also taught the SATs and passed CSET subtests. I am good at test prep.

Chess

I have been playing chess since I was in elementary school. At that time I was a highly advanced student and played tournaments against high school students and often won. I am 33 years old now and still play. I also have a great learn-to-play-chess curriculum that I use to teach chess in a step-by-step fun way. It can be tailored to different levels as well.

College Counseling

I have help with the post-secondary transition for students 15-16 years old and over. This includes vocational counseling, college counseling, and creating a plan with specific goals. Common Core

With the new common core standards I have attended numerous professional development events pertaining to Math and English instruction. I also have to write students goals which relate to the common core standards, thus I am very familiar with them. I also visit students in a wide range of general education classes based on the common core standards.

Dyslexia

I have a MA in special education. I have been teaching students with disabilities, from severe to mild, for over 10 years. I am also a credentialed California Special Education teacher. Linear Algebra

I am a credentialed CA special education teacher teaching multiple subjects. Algebra 1 is required by the state for graduation and I have lots of experience teaching it, including Linear Algebra.

Phonics

I am a credentialed California special education teacher. Many of my students are remedial readers and some require phonics instruction. I have also passed the RICA exam (Reading Instruction Competence Assessment) which qualifies me to teach all levels of reading. I am also a father who has taught his daughter to read from 3 years old on, including phonics.
