Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

For the past four years I have been a tutor to all ages at The Reading Clinic in Saratoga, California. I have taught individualized programs that are based on Lindamood-Bell which are research-based, proven programs to help students succeed in reading, comprehension, and math. At The Reading Clinic, I have also tutored students in writing. My individualized approach is multi-sensory and focuses on strengthening visual memory along with creating mental images in the mind to understand what is read (including word problems) as well as to remember and integrate knowledge into the life-long thread of learning.

Grammar

For the past four years, I have been working at a Reading Clinic. I have tutored preK - high school students in grammar.

Handwriting

For the past four years, I have been working at The Reading Clinic in Saratoga. I have tutored preK - high school students in reading, comprehension, writing, study skills, handwriting, and math.

The program I prefer to use is to teach handwriting is Handwriting Without Tears. This program takes students step by step through making uppercase and lowercase of all the letters. Once they practice the steps to writing a letter, the student practices each letter several times and eventually begins practicing writing letters in words and sentences. I encourage students to initially use a color pen to allow them to engage in the process and to practice writing letters with their finger in a small sandbox or in the air. This practice allows the student to relate to the process with all of their senses and integrate letter writing much more easily.

I use proven, research-based programs that incorporate a multi-sensory experience which allows the student to more easily relate to the material and integrate into the lifelong thread of learning. I also do specific tasks that strengthen visual memory and use the imagination to allow the student to engage in the material and remember for the long-term.

Phonics

For the past four years, I have been working at The Reading Clinic in Saratoga. I have tutored preK - high school students in phonics, reading fluency, comprehension, writing, study skills, and math. I teach single syllable rules in nonsense and real words, one at a time until the student masters them all. Depending on the student's goals, I then teach rules to break multi-syllable words so they can feel confident in attacking any unknown word.

In customizing the lesson plans, it may be beneficial for students to see pictures of words with the sound they are currently learning or to practice a rhyme to help them make an association. I also use color coded blocks if necessary so that the student learns how to make sense of the sounds as they are blended together. This method helps the student feel the sounds in their mouth and then relate them to a combination of letters.

I use proven, research-based programs that incorporate a multi-sensory experience which allows the student to more easily relate to the material and integrate into the lifelong thread of learning. I also do specific tasks that strengthen visual memory and use the imagination to allow the student to engage in the material and remember for the long-term. In addition, I find that most students are able to focus better when they are moving around. So, I incorporate games and movement into every task possible.

Photography

I went to New College of California for my BA where I learned the technical aspects of exposure control and lighting. In my BA program as well as in my MFA program at John F. Kennedy University, I continued to hone my technical photography skills as well as my artistic eye. Over the past 10 years, I have had several shows in galleries and a museum where I have exhibited my photographs and paintings.

Reading

For the past four years, I have been working as a tutor in Saratoga. I have tutored preK - high school students in reading, comprehension, writing (including grammar), study skills, and math. I have used proven, research-based programs that incorporate a multi-sensory experience which allows the student to more easily relate to the material and integrate into the lifelong thread of learning. I also do specific tasks that strengthen visual memory and use the imagination to allow the student to engage in the material and remember for the long-term.

Spelling

I use a phonics-based approach to build spelling abilities. I teach single syllable rules to help the student apply them to spelling. In addition, I teach students how to visually remember how to spell words that play by the rules and words that do not. I do this by strengthening the visual memory to help them mentally see the words they are learning. This skill helps students remember how to spell words more easily. If it is helpful, I also teach little tricks to help students remember how to spell difficult to remember words.

Study Skills

For the past four years, I have been working at The Reading Clinic in Saratoga. I have tutored preK - high school students in reading, comprehension, writing, study skills, and math. I have used proven, research-based programs that incorporate a multi-sensory experience which allows the student to more easily relate to the material and integrate into the lifelong thread of learning. I also do specific tasks that strengthen visual memory and use the imagination to allow the student to engage in the material and remember for the long-term. In addition, I use study techniques such as chunking, visualizing the content, and sequencing into a visual timeline to give students specific study methods that they can use on their own.

Writing

I was a Learning Specialist at a school, working with students in reading and writing. In addition, I worked at a tutoring clinic as a tutor, curriculum specialist, and manager for over four years. In these positions, I designed multi-sensory, individualized curriculum for students with learning challenges and students that needed one-on-one support. My approach to reading and writing is to engage all of the student's senses. I work with strengthening the visual memory so that the student can more easily recall information. These methods also allow the student to engage with their working memory so that they can more easily hold information in the forefront of their mind while working on the task at hand. I also encourage students to visualize what they are reading and writing because language is a visual system. If we don't put pictures to words, the words are meaningless. This method helps students first understand the whole story and how each part relates to the next. With writing, this method helps students organize their thoughts, use more descriptive words, and edit as if they were the reader. Students learn to self-monitor and self-check towards becoming independent learners.
