First lesson was kind of discussion our information about how to do the lesson. In the beginning, I was not sure how I was trying to get a help from the tutor. After our conversation, I found out what I needed. He understands my background (Japanese is my first language), and I think that he will be able to help me because he used to live in Japan for 9 years and taught English over there. After discussion, I asked him that I was writing essays and then he was going to correct my essays. In addition, he is going to give me his comments and advices. I know he writes good, for he write very nice e-mails. Also, he is very polite. I hope he will be a good tutor.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have studied and played organized basketball since my youth. After playing on my high school team and university team for one year, I have continued to play in organized leagues and clubs as an adult. While teaching overseas, I was also given the opportunity to coach and assist in clinics teaching basketball among other sports. My knowledge of the rules and nuances of the game in addition to my experience as a teacher/tutor/mentor/coach make me confident that I am more than qualified to tutor basketball. Additionally, I have competence in related aspects of the sport such as fitness, health, and nutrition which I can share with any student.
I have an MA in TESOL as well as a TESOL Graduate Certificate from San Jose State University. Significant courses studied at SJSU include Second Language Acquisition, Methods and Materials in TESOL, Curriculum Development, Intercultural Communication, English Structures, and Bilingualism and Language Contact among many others. For over seven years, I worked with local governments in Japan as an English language specialist and implemented language programs and curriculums for numerous schools. I was also instrumental in executing the daily operations of many of these programs while dealing with students of all ages and levels in a variety of settings.
Also, I have over four years experience tutoring non-native English speakers in a variety of settings. I've conducted lessons focused on grammar, academic writing, conversation, and numerous other specific topic lessons aimed at helping students reach their learning objectives.
Finally, as an adult second-language learner in Japan and Kenya myself, I am fully aware, understanding and sensitive to the demands and needs of the ESL/EFL learner. Competence in the ability to tutor Japansese comes from a deep and thorough understanding of the language and culture. After spending 2 years taking Japanese classes at the University of La Verne, I spent a year studying abroad at Hokusei Gakuen University in Sapporo, Japan. During that time, I took intensive Japanese courses while simultaneously living with a home stay family. After returning to the US, I was able to pass level 3 of the Japanese Proficiency Test in 1998.
Since then, I lived and worked in Japan for about 8 years while continuing to study the language and learn the intricacies of the culture. During my time in Japan, I was able to become proficient in numerous aspects of the language, including conversation, grammar, reading, writing, listening, etc.
My understanding of the language and culture alongside my experience in foreign language acquisition demonstrates my ability to effectively tutor Japanese.
I have been working in special education classrooms as a senior instructional aide for the Santa Cruz County Office of Education for the past two school years, including the summers. Last school year I worked at a school in the county which catered to students with autism. The Chrysalis Program has students from pre-school age through grade 3. I also worked during the summer program at the school in 2009 and 2010. At the beginning of this school year, I was given a promotion to Senior Instructional Aide and have been working in a special education classroom based at Cabrillo College in Aptos for post-secondary students (with a variety of learning disabilities) aged 18-22. In addition to all of the classroom experience I have over the last few years, I have attended numerous trainings and workshops in this field, and continue to work and grow in this field.
