About Douglas

I have been teaching biological science classes at the middle and high school level within both public and independent schools since 2003. Classes I have taught include Biology (regular, honors and AP levels), and Molecular Biology, Human Genetics, Anatomy and Physiology, and Forensic Science electives. I have also taught Chemistry and Physical Science, and have extensive experience with small group and individual tutoring.

In addition, I have experience developing (writing, editing and proofreading) multiple Biology textbooks for high school. These textbooks can greatly assist in a tutoring situation. The advanced version of the textbook is written at the introductory college level. Many of my students have used these resources, which I can make available free of any charge, and find them extremely useful. Many have said these resources are more helpful than their school supplied textbook. Just as my science background allows me to tutor for the ACT Science exam, my experiences with the writing, editing and proofreading processes allow me to also tutor students preparing for the GRE, SAT Reading, or ACT Reading exams, as well as the CBEST.

Prior to teaching, I was involved in biomedical and forensic science research at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Quantico, VA and Washington DC.

I have been tutoring in one-on-one and small group situations for almost 10 years. My students have done extremely well, and most are very comfortable with the environment I create for them. My teaching and tutoring style encourages student participation. Students will take active roles in their learning, answering the many questions I pose to them.

I believe it is all my previous experiences that make me a good educator, providing my students with many stories and examples of how science is used to help people. As your tutor, you will learn the material. You will also feel comfortable and appreciate the material, allowing you to continue studying and learning individually. The skills I teach will allow you to succeed in high school, in college, and beyond.

I am also available to assist students with understanding what it means to be a scientist. I am the editor of three on-lne journals: Understanding Biodiversity, Profiles in Science (early 2016) and Current Trends in the Biomedical Sciences (late 2016). These are all options for students to become published. To find out more about these journals and how to become published, send me an email.

I can also assist students interested in an internship in a biomedical research lab. I have had great success placing students in world-class research laboratories, and am available to work with ambitious students to help them find the right lab for them. To find out more about this process, send an email.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

The ACT Reading test is based on four types of reading selections: the social studies, the natural sciences, literary narrative, and the humanities. I have been writing and editing educational materials for almost a decade. Much of what I have written is published and approved for use in the classroom. As a professional writer, editor and proofreader, I am highly experienced at the topics associated with the ACT Reading exam.

ACT Science

Having taught all types of science in both public and independent schools for over 12 years, and as the chief editor of a number of online science textbooks, as well as over 1,000 published individual learning concepts, I am readily able to mentor a student as he/she prepares for the ACT Science exam.

Algebra 1

Algebra is one of the defining topics of mathematics. Together with a broad knowledge of science, understanding algebra allows an educated person to succeed in our society. I have been teaching science for almost 13 years. This includes teaching relevant math concepts. I have also been tutoring math for almost 10 years. I believe my teaching and tutoring experiences will help you succeed.

Biology

I have been teaching all levels of biology for well over 10 years. I have taught in both public and private schools, I have tutored well over 50 students in 1:1 settings. My expertise ranges from cell and molecular biology, to genetics, ecology and evolution. I can also tutor forensic science, chemistry and physical science.

CBEST

As a teacher I had to pass the CBEST exam. Though this exam is fairly straightforward for many people, preparing for the test is always a good idea, even if just to familiarize yourself with the format. However, for many people, the concepts on the exam need to be revisited prior to taking the test. This is where I can be of assistance. I have many years of preparing all types of students for many exams, and I will have no issues preparing students of various abilities for the CBEST.

Ecology

In addition to teaching ecology for well over 10 years, I have been elected a fellow of the Linnean Society of London, for my work on understanding biodiversity.

Genetics

I have been trained as a human geneticist. After obtaining my Ph.D., I completed a fellowship in human genetics at Cedars-Sinai Medical center in Los Angeles. I then worked on the clinical aspects of the Human Genome Project at the National Institutes of Health.

Grammar

Using proper grammar is an important aspect of the writing process. I have been a writer and editor of a number of science textbooks, as well as over 1,000 individual online learning concepts. I have had to make sure I use, and my other writers use, proper grammar in their materials. The use of correct grammar is just one aspect that makes these materials useful and trustworthy to the student.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the reading of a proof or an electronic copy of a publication to detect and correct production errors. These can include checking and correcting spelling and punctuation, as well as syntax.
As the current editor of a number of science educational materials, it is my responsibility to proofread the materials of various authors. I have almost ten years experience as a science editor, and am well qualified to assist in any necessary proofreading.

Writing

Having been a science writer for almost 30 years, and more recently a writer and editor of science educational materials, including numerous textbooks, I am highly qualified to help a student with the writing process.
