About Arthur

I've been tutoring since 2008, freshman year in college at Columbia University. I've tutored fellow college students, post-bac students, as well as middle and high school students, mostly in Mathematics and Physics. After graduating college, before entering graduate school, I tutored middle and high school level Mathematics and the Sciences at a tutoring center.

Tutoring has been a great way for me to work individually with my students to better know their needs, and to cater to their unique approaches to the subjects. It also allows me to be more creative in the ways I present the subject matter, and to consider different ways to understand and learn material that I may have taught and learnt many times.

My approach in tutoring is to start from the student's own understanding of the subject matter, his/her approach to learning the material; then, to see where understanding is lacking or could be improved; finally, by supplying my own perspectives and approaches, to expand the student's understanding and to build the student's own approach to the subject matter and to solving problems. My goal is to enable my students to form their own methods and perspectives on the subject, to grow in their problem solving skills, and to enjoy the process of learning new things and solving problems.

My undergraduate training in Physics and graduate studies in Materials Science have given me a solid background in Mathematics and the Physical Sciences, particularly to have a good balance between the theoretical and intuitive understanding of mathematical concepts, as well as more imperial but helpful techniques for solving problems.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored high school and middle school students in algebra 1 and 2 for a few years, helping them grasp the fundamentals of algebra and techniques for approaching difficult problems.

Algebra 2

I have tutored algebra 2 to high school and college students many times.

Calculus

I have tutored Calculus at both college and high school levels for several years, helping many students succeed in their classes.

Differential Equations

With a B.A. in Physics and M.S. in Materials Science, I have the educational and academic background for graduate level differential equations, and have tutored other undergraduates in college level differential equations. I am deeply familiar with the techniques and methods to solving problems related to differential equations, as well as how differential equations are used in Physics and the sciences. My approach to tutoring differential equations is to help students understand the physical meaning behind the behaviors described by the differential equations.

Physics

Graduated Cum Laude in Physics from Columbia University, and have tutored college level Physics for several years.

Precalculus

I have tutored pre-calculus for several years to mostly high school students, and have been greatly successful at helping students grasp concepts and techniques at solving problems, as well as applying learned concepts and methods to next-level problems and topics.
