About Andrey

I am a senior at San Jose State University, Department of English. I have always loved reading and writing, since I was a high-school student when my friend introduced me to the Forgotten Realms series. Words are a powerful tool, and this is often overlooked in our daily culture, where science and math rule the land.

Though I've seen many a math problem reduce a student to tears it's fare more rare to see a person truly sink in and dissect the metaphors and imagery in a good book these days. I feel that creative arts are more and more being viewed as something accomplished only through being born with that ability, whereas the truth is that there is just as much required effort and hard work put into writing a novel--or even an essay--as there is in learning how to classify the phenotypical variations between organisms.

As a tutor I hope to instill this value in my students, that not only is writing and reading as much a scientific progress, but while like science, it is not always an arbitrary set of rules that determine our success as writers. I particularly enjoy the topics of grammar and etymology, as these subjects best show the logical structure behind not only the English language, but all language in general. Understanding of the logical steps behind these topics is the best way, in my experience, of learning how to become a better writer and linguist. As a tutor I realize the importance of not simply drilling rote memorization into a student, but in fact that the best way of learning is to teach someone else, and so while I do hope to help my students with their English qualms and quandaries, at the same time this is also an opportunity for me to sort out and polish off my own knowledge of the English language and use that in my continuing writing of both personal and college papers.

My knowledge of the Russian language comes from the unrelenting and daily education of my parents. I was born in Russia, and my parents believe--correctly--that the language and culture must be preserved in both myself and my children. I am comfortable with not only academic lexicon, but also the day to day conversations and slang that is used between friends and relatives.

I am currently an English major at San Jose State University. I have written papers both academic and informal. I actually enjoy writing my own stories and settings for not only my weekend role-play group meetings, but also I write my own stories as well. Currently I am taking a fascinating course that is focused on the focal (academic) not tacit (when something "feels" right) knowledge of the English language. This focus on actually explaining of why a writer would use "fewer" instead of less, or more importantly of how different sentences can be categorized into 5 distinct types, has given my personal and academic writing a large step up in proficiency.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I was born in Russia and travel there regularly. My parents, both born in Russia, have kept Russian in the household as the primary language. I am fluent in speaking, reading, and writing in Russian.

Patient and good practice — My nephew had the 1st lesson with him last week. Andrey asked for quick essay on the spot. After reading my nephew writing, Andrey would be able to tell some of his weakness like grammar, compound and complex sentences which were all correct. Andrey will work with my nephew on these items and make him a better writer. ...
