About Travis

Understanding chemistry is central to understanding any aspect of the world around us. I assist my students by relating their coursework back to our everyday lives, which makes it easier to digest and remember the material. I have had much success using this technique in my tutoring over the past five years. I can tutor general chemistry as well as organic chemistry and I would be happy to help you prepare for the chemistry portion of the MCAT, the GRE subject exam in chemistry, or the chemistry AP exam. See my subject section below for a complete list of the subjects I tutor!

I graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 2010 with a Bachelors degree in biochemistry. I tutored both individuals and small groups while at UT Austin. I was awarded my PhD in Chemistry from Princeton University in 2015. At Princeton, I taught general chemistry and organometallic chemistry while pursuing research in the field of organic chemistry. Most importantly, with all my experience I understand what knowledge is required to get the grades you want in your chemistry classes, and I hope you’ll let me help you achieve these goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Genetics

I have taken both undergraduate and graduate level courses in genetics and received excellent grades in both. To obtain my bachelor's degree in biochemistry, I was required to understand the concepts of genetics at both the macro- and microscopic levels. This allows me to teach genetics to individuals with a chemical or biological background with the same efficacy.

Organic Chemistry

I have over 6 years of experience working in a synthetic organic chemistry laboratory and have authored several publications involving organic chemistry that have been published in peer-reviewed journals. This requires a strong working knowledge of the principles and applications of organic chemistry. My teaching experience includes tutoring organic chemistry to undergraduate students for over six years as well as teaching both general chemistry and organometallic chemistry at Princeton University. I am completely comfortable teaching any topic from this subject area (organometallic chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry, bio-organic chemistry, etc.). I was awarded my PhD in chemistry from Princeton in 2015.

Excellent tutor!!

My daughter has been working with Travis for over one month now. Travis is an exceptional teacher. As a Princeton PhD student, he obviously knows the material and is extremely smart. But that doesn't always translate into a good teacher. He is patient and explains the concepts very well. We will continue to use him and we highly recommend him.
