Update, April 10: My tutoring schedule is currently full. The best way to have a chance at being added to my schedule is to plan ahead. Please inquire several weeks in advance of your need. Thank you for your interest.
I'm a graduate of Berkeley (B.A., biochemistry) and Stanford (Ph.D., immunology). So, which side should I sit on at the Big Game?
I currently work as a research scientist at a local university. I have been a college-level teaching assistant. I have tutored many students over the years, including my son, who just started college. I can offer tutoring in many subjects, but my specialties are science, math, SAT review, and computer programming (I favor Python). I hope to teach you more than just what you need for tomorrow's test. I hope you will also learn how to keep learning on your own! Update, April 10: My tutoring schedule is currently full. If you are located at the outer limits of my travel range (Fremont, Palo Alto), I may request an extra $5 to $10/hour. I will teach two students together in the same subject for an extra $25/hour.
John has been working with our 16 year old daughter with AP Chemistry for just the past few weeks and we (her parents) feel it is the best thing we could have done for her. The first few weeks of school we watched our daughter struggle in AP Chem and decided we needed to give her a little extra help - so we found John!
John is extremely thorough and jumps right into their sessions. He knows his subjects backwards and forwards, is very patient, and explains topics in different ways to help our daughter better grasp the lessons. He makes sure that our daughter fully understands the topic before moving on to the next.
John is very accessible and always responds in a timely manner. Within just these past few weeks our daughter's grades in AP Chem have already improved greatly! We are grateful for John's time and knowledge and are thrilled that we were lucky to find such a wonderful tutor for our daughter!
Although I came to John seeking help for a specific project, he patiently explained the concepts which my online course had not covered adequately. I had been to another tutor prior to John who just solved the problems himself and then explained what he had done. I learned nothing this way. John was very patient and detailed in his explanations, and even as a programming novice I felt much more engaged, excited, and ready to learn. John gave me an action plan for after the lesson. I look forward to my next session with John, and highly recommend him for anyone else who needs help in CS.
My 10th grader daughter needs help in Algebra 2 and we're very happy we've found John. In her first lesson, John helped my daughter to understand that writing out her steps in an organized fashion is always important. We're looking forward to more lessons from John. Thank you.
John had worked with my daughter with AP Biology for the past few months. He knows his subject matter very well, and is extremely thorough. He is patient, punctual, and accommodating in his schedule. We were happy to have found such a dedicated tutor!
John is a very sincere and dedicated tutor. He is always prepared and is very thorough. I really liked John's teaching style and he has a very good understanding in Mathematics.
John is very knowledgeable, on time, and patient.
UPDATE: he likes his job and that makes learning more enjoyable. He has a high sense of humor and he understands the situation of students.
John has been working with my daughter for the past few months on AP Biology. He is very knowledgeable on the subject and always explains concepts thoroughly. After each class, my daughter is able to have a better understanding on the contents covered. John is also very patient and always drives for fully understanding on the topics.
In addition, John is reliable, responsive and always does his best to accommodate any schedule changes.
John has been working with my son for over 2 months now. He has provided excellent guidance & has boosted my son's confidence in pre-calculus. John is reliable & has a lot of patience.
John continues to be a great resource for my son. He is also flexible & recently did an extra hour session prior to my son's exam.
Update on March 22nd
John is working with my son for over 1 year. He is always prepared for each lesson. My son really appreciates having John for the individual tutoring in calculus.
I am very impressed with John. He is flexible and reliable. After just a few lessons, I applied the knowledge I learned from him directly to my job. I would and do recommend him to anyone wanting to learn.
Excellent tutor - My son had trouble with AP biology and John did an excellent job in clearing his doubts. He is very patient and teaches the basics very thoroughly. He works with the student to understand the subject and problems rather just teaching. My son now feels AP biology is an easy subject. He got an A in the final exam.
John helped me immensely in my graduate-level Bioinformatics Algorithms class. He was able to fill in my background knowledge in Python 3, statistics (Stochastics), and biology (namely genomics/transcriptomics/proteomics) to complete class projects. Together we built parsers and statistical models that included Markov chains, Hidden Markov models, and null model generators (with graphics). We even made a foray into dynamic programming with outlining our own implementation of a Smith-Waterman sequence alignment. Even with these complex tasks and topics, I walked out of each tutoring session with an increased understanding of the material and a commensurate increase in my confidence. I also walked out with a framework of Python code that allowed me to draw my own conclusions, and build off our tutoring sessions on my own. In addition to his excellent teaching/tutoring ability, John is also patient, punctual, and professional. If you need help in math, science, or computer science, definitely schedule time to meet with John before his schedule fills up!
John is an excellent tutor who is patient and explains things thoroughly to help you succeed.
He helped me with SAT math and some vocabulary, spending time to explain and specifically go over the content of each problem.
He provided me with many tips regarding the different types of problems on the SAT.
Sometimes a tutor can be impatient or they rush through explanations since they know the subject so well.
What I really liked about John is, if I struggled catching on to something he was teaching, he did not rush; he recognized I
may not really get it and patiently explained again or took another approach to help me see the light!
I highly recommend John as a tutor and would not hesitate to use his services again!
John is very knowledgeable about the subject matter. He was well prepared and was very patient. John was very focused in sessions to strengthen understanding. My son is happy with his tutoring time. Thanks very much John.
I am very grateful to John for teaching me to program in Python and helping me to develop automation for lab test. I am a senior hardware engineer with little software development experience. With John’s help, I have developed a useful program for me to perform my job. I appreciate his programming skill, effective teaching method, and friendly attitude toward a student like me. He can teach an old dog new trick by improving his capability in a highly technical environment.
John has helped bring my trigonometry honors grade up drastically. He reviews what I need to know and helps me step by step through the problem. His assistance has improved my grade in math and my confidence in that subject. He has helped a lot.
Although John has a full schedule, he was able to accommodate my daughter's day off from school. He was very patient and came prepared. He reviewed some tests I sent him before the session to inform him of where she needed help. He kept track of the allocated time and smoothly checked in with my daughter to make sure where they were spending time was valuable to her. I liked that he asked her leading questions to see if she was following and could figure out on her own the next step. When she didn't know, he gently informed her of what it was and the rational behind it. Great session that was valuable to her.
John is an awesome and incredible tutor. He is able to clearly explain a variety of concepts and is very patient to help you get to an understanding of what you need help on. On top of that, he is a super friendly guy.
John is one the best tutors my daughter has ever had. He is very knowledgeable in the subject and has helped my daughter tremendously in preparing for her Science Fair project.
It was my daughter's first time participating in a Science Fair, and she was feeling very lost in her project topic on using bioinformatics for analyzing proteins. Fortunately, John knows the subject inside and out, and gave her a great deal of ideas and guidance on how to research and what to study. He is very patient and good at explaining. We are very thankful for his help!
I highly recommend him to anyone needing a tutor.
John is incredibly knowledgeable about Biology. He has a gift for explaining complex and abstract concepts. I would highly recommend John for any high school or college student because he is very patient and a good communicator with a wealth of knowledge.
I am pleased to say that John is the best bio tutor I have had. He knows the subject INSIDE and OUT, and comes very prepared! John never rushes you and he makes sure you understand the topic. He encourages you to ask questions and is very patient. Overall he is a great tutor and I look forward to more sessions!
John provided in-home tutoring for my daughter. I was looking for one teacher to teach both English and Math of the SAT. John was one of the very few who said he would guide the student in both. In math, John gave useful tips on how best to tackle problems. He would make my daughter take sections of the test during every session and while she did them, he would independently be working on the same section. The two would compare answers and then discuss more efficient methods. John's vocabulary list was also quite extensive. He would review new and old words during every class. He assigned essays each week and his comments on them were very insightful. I felt that John provided personalized lessons to suit the student's specific needs.
On the organizational side, John was very punctual and had his calendar marked for for the next several classes. We had the flexibility to cancel a particular class just with a day's notice in case there was a need.
I would highly recommend John to any student who is looking for some help in preparing for SAT.
Due to an illness, our daughter was required to do some home studies, John was excellent at conveying what was needed to understand her honors Chem course her Sophomore year. He even gave his own questions/quiz which were often better than the text book and which were able to be submitted as coursework. We were rushed as the semester was ending and much material needed to be covered; he was flexible with scheduling, always on time and often, after asking if alright, would add on time to make sure as much as possible was covered and done that day. Our daughter worked with another tutor for another subject and said John was definitely the better at explaining things. Final grade was a B+, which she was really happy with!
Our 13 year old son is currently getting tutored in python programming from John L. We are very happy with the sessions. Our son is picking up great concepts about programming in general as well as those specific to Python programming. Moreover he is interested in learning more, which is good!
John is very prompt and responsive - very easy to work with. I really like the programming "homework" assigned by John. This gives my son the opportunity to practice what he has learnt and think outside the box to solve these logic assignments. Overall a very knowledgeable and qualified instructor, great at teaching concepts with patience that will develop greater interest. Definitely a big plus for kids who want to get a head-start!
John is very knowledgeable in Chemistry and is very passionate about teaching the subject. John simplifies difficult concepts, reinforces key ideas and validates that the student actually understood the concepts. He is prompt, personable and connects well with teens. Strongly recommend John as a Chemistry tutor.
John is a very intelligent tutor who goes into the chapter and finds ways to simplify its content. He gives many examples, is very patient and teaches concepts in a way that is easy to understand. John comes on time, covers the material, reviews it and leaves notes to study as a follow up. Extremely thorough and he makes sure my son "gets it" before moving on to another topic! We are very pleased with John's style of teaching.
The first time I met John, he made an incredible first impression with his friendly approach and nice personality. Not only was he engaged during tutoring sessions, but he took the time to contact my son outside of class to get a clear understanding of what needed to be taught at the next session and set up times that worked with both of us. John is also very punctual, always showing up on time and starting work right away. He's only my son's AP chemistry teacher, but he hasn't just gained knowledge of chemistry alone. John will even incorporate other subjects into a lesson to give him a broader understanding. The lesson was very well paced, he did not hurry my son, and took the time to work out every individual problem and mistake. John is a quality tutor that has been improving my son's understanding of sciences and math since the very beginning.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a professional research biologist, with several peer-reviewed publications and a biotechnology patent to my name. I hold a Bachelors' degree in Biochemistry from U.C. Berkeley, and a PhD in Immunology from Stanford.
I have ten years of practical, hands-on computer programming experience through my work as a scientist. Python is my primary programming language. I have also programmed in Pascal and C. I can teach you the basics of computer programming, up to more complex subjects (object-oriented programming, classes, inheritance, duck typing, name spaces, etc.). I like to teach programming by doing it. We will work at your computer, not from a book.
My Bachelors' degree training and my Ph.D. training each included course work in Genetics.
I am the co-author of two peer-reviewed scientific articles which revealed novel information about the genetics of South American monkeys.
I have tutored a college student who advertised for help with Biology, but who was actually taking a Genetics course (Biology 22 at West Valley Community College). Please see the favorable feedback in my profile by Steven V.
I have ten years of practical, hands-on computer programming experience through my work as a scientist. Python is my primary programming language. Please see the recent review from my student, Nelson S., who is a Silicon Valley electrical engineer.
