I’m utterly passionate about creating powerful written and spoken English. I am equally passionate in my desire to teach and assist all other people to have a confident command of English, no matter what their starting point. In my career, I have lead and developed many software projects in Silicon Valley, I am now transitioning fully to a public speaking and coaching practice. In the mid-nineties I worked as a trainer for communication skills in the high tech industry, my clients included Hewlett Packard Professional Services Consultants and Oracle technical support staff for all day workshops.
I am a veteran speaker in Toastmasters and current officer at two clubs. I speak frequently and also help present educational programs at clubs all around the bay area. In Toastmasters, my constructive evaluations have been called “masterful.” And my prepared speeches have been described as "the epitome of elucidation.” I serve as mentor to new toastmasters in my clubs with three current mentees. My speech evaluation skills were recently featured on a Bay-to-Bay television program.
My most celebrated mentee was the 2010 winner of the Toastmaster District 4 humorous speech contest. I assisted him in composing his contest winning speech. (District 4 stretches from San Francisco to Monterey and includes hundreds of clubs and contestants.)
I am a graduate of the ProTrack professional training program for public speakers. This program is sponsored by the Northern California Chapter of the NSA (National Speakers Association). I am frequently requested to provide speech delivery and speech composition feedback by both professional and aspiring speakers in the area.
In addition, I am co-leader of a group on the “South Bay Public Speaking Skills Group” In this group, meeting bi-weekly, I provide live in-the-moment coaching as participants practice their front of the room speaking skills. These groups are sponsored by a San Francisco organization where I have attended and co-lead both their “Boot Camp” and “Advanced Boot Camp” speaker trainings.
I have also studied and worked with other trainers to produce and deliver specialized speaker skills programs on the Peninsula. Recently I delivered a one hour public workshop at the ProMatch professional center in Sunnyvale. I hold NLP certificates at both the practitioner and master practitioner levels. NLP emphasizes the art of exquisite listening and I employ that art to fully hear and respond to the needs and motivations of the listener. Though my final studies in college were computer science, I was initially a communications major and have attended many workshops and courses on fiction composition, including the New School for Social Research in New York City.
I fervently believe that for every learner there is an optimal direction and challenge level as they acquire new communication skills and confidence. My role is to help them find that optimal path and accelerate their efforts with enthusiastic and skillful advice and information. I provide either written or oral feedback always based on the learners goals and the requirements of the current project. I’m utterly passionate about creating powerful written and spoken English. I started working with Roy in Nov. 2014. It has been a great experience for me because of Roy's knowledge and experiences. He asks good questions to understand what I am trying to improve. Based on my needs, he quickly pointed out where I can improve and observe improved results quickly. I really glad that I have the opportunity to work with Roy. Highly recommend.
Roy is a pleasure to work with. He goes above and beyond to meet our needs and schedule. He is friendly, creative and reliable. Most importantly, he delivers results. He helped my children win their speech contest. I highly recommend him.
I used Roy several times to help me with my public speaking. He uses all his experience to give you top notch feedback. I wouldn't have won a speech contest if it were not for Roy. Sometimes he gives you "tough love", but it only helps you improve.
Roy's experience is so broad that he can improve many aspects of your speaking: body language, vocal variety, organization, audience rapport, and so on.
I highly recommend him.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My free form comment contains many details highlighting my experience in coaching and performing public speaking. Briefly, I am a veteran advanced Toastmaster. I coach other speakers and have experience in delivering all day workshops. I have trained in speaking with various coaches and courses, including the eleven-month Protrack program of the National Speakers Association of Northern California.
Bottom Line: Work with me and EVERY aspect of your speaking effectiveness will improve. We will address: 1)"presence"/confidence and breathing, 2)Vocal quality, volume, and prosody, 3)Your message, word choices, structure and stylings, 4) Matching gestures, movement, and pauses with your message, 5)your level of diction/word choice and how to optimize it for different audiences.
Vocabulary choice is very important to the success of a piece of writing. Beyond conveying accurate meaning, the vocabulary can also signal the sophistication and expertise of the writer. Further, word choice helps set the tone or level of diction for the composition: formal, informal, serious, casual, etc. Awareness of these aspects of vocabulary enable a writer to move from acceptable and competent onward to exceptional and impressive.
Writing skill is a life-long pursuit. There is no upper limit to skill and fluency. Along the way, I believe progress is achieved by creating a supportive and interesting partnership between tutor and student. Helping students stay connected with the purpose and structure of their composition allows them the satisfaction of knowing that they're making solid progress and developing ever more skill in editing and sculpting their compositions. Depending on the learner's skill level, examples and templates can accelerate insight and progress.
