About Youn

I have 6 years of experience teaching math at inner city schools across the country. I started as a middle school math teacher in Oakland, CA before bouncing out to Boston, MA where I taught GED Math at the county house of corrections. I then returned to middle school math in Washington, DC while garnering experience working for a public charter school.

Teachers often say that they learn just as much (if not more) from their students than how much their students learn from them. And while it's become a bit cliche to say, I also believe that this is a testament to it's truth. My experience certainly hasn't been an exception to this. Some of the lessons I've learned from my students include:

* CREATING & FINDING 'OUT-OF-THE-BOX' RESOURCES *
- Many of the schools I worked for weren't equipped with a full set of textbooks let alone paper for copy machines. This pushed me to exercise my creativity both in making my own teaching materials and also in looking for resources in unexpected places.

* MEETING STUDENTS WHERE THEY ARE AND "CODE BREAKING" FEEDBACK *
- Among the hundreds of students I've worked with, no two were alike. Every child has had their own set of strengths and weaknesses. Success comes from taking the time to get to know each student and problem solving to meet their unique needs.
- I've also discovered that sometimes you can't take a student's feedback at face value. The reoccurring headache before an exam or the tyrannical teacher out to get them may have more to do with a student's lack of confidence or anxiety rooted in a previous bad experience. "Breaking the code" and filling in the whole picture of a student can help identify the real root of a problem and lead to a solution more quickly.

* CREATING VALUE FOR KNOWLEDGE *
- Staying motivated is a common problem for students. Struggling with this myself, I turned to more project based lessons during my last few years of in the classroom. Reminding myself and helping students understand how knowledge can be practically applied to real world situations created enough value for students to stay engaged.

More recently, I've served 2 years as a private tutor in Seattle, WA. Transitioning to the role of tutor has allowed me to take more time in addressing executive functioning and study skills with students, which can sometimes single-handedly have a major impact on a student's success. My tutoring experience has also afforded me the opportunity to work up close with many students having autism & ADD. This has allowed me to build a foundation of tools and strategies that can further empower students in overcoming their challenges.

Bottom line, I enjoy helping students succeed and have devoted a lot of time to learning how to do that well. If you have or know of a student that is struggling, I'd love to be of service. Please don't hesitate to reach out and I hope we can make something happen soon!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
