About Cheryl

I have been a lifelong lover of words, and I have been fortunate to develop that passion as a literature major in college, where I earned a BA (summa cum laude) in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on English and the history of science, and in graduate school, where I am currently a PhD candidate focusing on nineteenth- and twentieth-century British literature.

I have been a teaching assistant in various college-level literature classes, spanning a range of periods, genres, and themes, each with a strong focus on close reading, critical analysis, and writing. I have also received extensive training for, and have taught, one class specifically focused on academic writing. Being a teaching assistant also gave me thorough experience working with students one-on-one in office hours, where I could give students individual, intensive guidance on their writing and grasp of literary concepts. In addition to teaching literature and writing, I also have experience in professional-level editing and proofreading, both free-lance and for a prominent independent academic press.

One of the greatest pleasures of working with students is being able to provide individualized, detailed attention to address a student's academic and/or writing goals, and I find one-on-one or small group settings the most enjoyable.

I am available for tutoring every day, except from 2-3 p.m. on Thursdays, and I am willing to travel to locations to meet with students.

I look forward to working with you and helping you meet your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am a PhD candidate in English literature with over three years of experience teaching critical analysis and close reading of literary texts of a variety of periods, forms, and themes, for groups of about 25 students. Courses have included: ENGL 103B ("British Literature from 1789-1900"), ENGL 10 ("Introduction to Literary Studies"), ENGL 150 ("Introduction to Anglo-Irish Literature"), ENGL 102 ("British & American Literature,1650-1789"), ENGL 187LL ("Literature & Life"), and Writing 2, an introduction to academic writing. I've also done a little one-on-one work with students as a reader/grader in the following classes: ENGL 133SO ("American Regional Literature") and MCDB 40X ("Memory: a Bridge between Neuroscience and Humanities"). This past winter and spring, I privately tutored a local high school junior in essay-writing for her English class.

Proofreading

My past professional editorial/proofreading experience includes: serving as a member of the Editorial Board of "ASEBL (Association for the Study of Ethical Behavior/Evolutionary Biology in Literature) Journal;" serving as an editorial assistant on the staff of "Starting Lines" (the student publication of the UCSB Writing Program); designing, compiling, and editing the UCSB English Department Newsletter; and serving as an editorial intern for the UCSB Kavli Foundation, for the UCSB Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and for "ARTMargins," a professional academic journal of Eastern European art and architectural criticism hosted by the UCSB Department of Germanic, Slavic, and Semitic Studies. I have also edited two academic book projects -- on twenty-first-century green architecture and modernist architecture and gender theory, respectively -- for a prominent open-access, independent academic press known as punctum books.

SAT Reading

I have taught critical reading of literary texts in a variety of college-level English classes, including introductory literary studies (which has an especially heavy emphasis on the basics of critical, or close, reading) and British and American literature from the Enlightenment to the post-WWII era, and I have also incorporated critical reading of college-level reading material in an introductory course on academic writing.

Writing

My past experience in teaching writing includes working as an instructor of a class on academic writing at UCSB (Fall 2014). My other writing experience includes working as an editorial assistant for various educational and professional venues: e.g., "Starting Lines," the student-authored journal of the UCSB Writing Program (Winter & Spring 2014); punctum books, a prominent independent academic publisher (Spring 2014-present); and "ArtMargins," a journal of art and architectural criticism hosted by the Department of Germanic & Slavic Studies at UCSB (Spring 2014-Spring 2016).
