About Emi

I have taught English in Japan for over 7 years. My clients include business people, travel lovers, homemakers, artists, students, scholars, and entrepreneurs. I enjoy working with people individually toward their personal goals, building confidence, and pulling inspiration from their interests and passions to use English in a practical, communicative way. I love listening to students and I'm happy when they ask questions. Cultural understanding plays a large role in the way I teach.

I was born and raised in California. I studied Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language at UCLA. I have done some ESL student teaching at Santa Monica College and adult tutoring with the Santa Barbara Public Library.

Lesson content is up to the student, and I am flexible. Besides conversation practice with correction, I can incorporate grammar drills, pronunciation (moving mouth, jaw, and tongue to produce phonetic sounds), intonation, rhythm, and stress. I suggest students do review, self-study, and preparation between lessons, such as listening and/or writing practice.

Due to frequent travel, I welcome lessons online.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
