About me: I am currently completing my Masters in Clinical Psychology and have my BA from Pomona College (the nation's #2 college, based on Forbes 2013 rankings). I have always been a straight A student and know what it takes to help other students succeed. My specialties are in psychology and writing. I have hands-on experience with one-on-one teaching both in the states and internationally (Cambodia and Indonesia). My SAT scores were 760 in Math and 750 in the Verbal portion for a total of 1510 (out of 1600, pre-2005).
My tutoring philosophy: I take a very personalized approach to tutoring. Everyone learns in their own way and I work to understand the student's preferred learning style and pace to best support their studies. I believe the tutoring relationship - student, tutor, and parents - is the key to academic success. I work toward creating a relationship where the student and parents are comfortable to let me know when something is not clicking or when a different approach might work best. I am very adaptable and welcome and incorporate student and parent feedback. I am a gentle person, by nature, which I find serves the learning environment nicely for most students.
I greatly look forward to working with you! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have my B.A. from Pomona College, (which Forbes ranked as the #2 college nationally in 2013). I received all A's and B's while at Pomona despite full course loads all semesters, a job at the career development office and being a member of the ballroom dance team. Learning essential study skills was a must and I have since passed these on to several other students. I have since fine-tuned my study skills in two David Allen "Getting Things Done" seminars. David Allen is one of today's thought-leaders in productivity. Main lessons I will teach include breaking larger projects into smaller, more manageable pieces, techniques for memory, such as using mnemonics, time management, minimizing distractions while studying, the 80/20 rule, and healthy lifestyle changes that can support good study habits (e.g. sleep, nutrition, and exercise).
