Hello, my name is Skyler and I teach English at an international school in Santa Barbara (EF) to high school and college-aged students. The courses I teach now or have taught in the past include General English (B2.1, B2.3, C1.1, C1.2), Grammar & Idioms, Music & Poetry, Film Studies, Cambridge Exam Prep and Fundamentals of English.

I am a graduate of Westmont College with a B.A. in Religious Studies and a minor in English. I have five years of tutoring experience with a specialization in writing and the humanities.

I have experience tutoring both high school and college-aged students from Providence SB, SBCC, and UCSB, most specifically in essay writing and research.

I also have experience teaching abroad (in Italy) for almost a year. I am well-equipped to provide ESL lessons to all ages, from small children to adults.

Over the years I've learned that a combination of patience and an understanding that every individual learns and communicates in different ways are essential. In the beginning of each session I will ask the student what his/her short-term and long-term objectives in the tutored subject, then together we will devise a plan to take steps toward both goals. In every session my objective is to make writing fun. :)

If you have any additional questions feel free to contact me!

Study Skills

I currently have a 3.6 cumulative GPA in college due to study habits and skills that I have come to learn. I make flash cards, create memory games, rewrite notes, make sample worksheets, make online quizzes, re-highlight notes, etc. If I was to tutor a child in study skills, depending on their age I would choose one of these methods. I know that memory games work for all ages and are the easiest tool to help my learning.
