About Parker

My area of expertise and joy covers teaching disparate age groups from lower school children to lectures on entrepreneurship to businessmen and women. I have a B.A. in Psychology and CBEST certification to teach and have taught in the Carpinteria Unified School District.

My philosophy is very straight forward, namely, each person is unique and learns a bit differently. I was fortunate to have received an excellent K-12 prep school foundation and it was during this time I learned the significance of how unique we are as people and how we all learn differently. I have a tremendous respect and sensitivity in gaining a grasp of what a students strengths are and build on those. As a result, I have been fortunate to communicate to students in lower grades
to college level.

I am a people person, first and foremost, and enjoy getting to know each student on a personal level as this allows me to end up learning from them as much as the from me. If you are shy, great! If you are a bit stubborn and having bad hair days, who doesn't? I adjust as it's imperative in being there as a support on a personal level in order to provide an efficient learning environment, in my opinion.

I am extremely easing going as an instructor, however, understand that course curriculum needs to be adhered to, hence, provide lesson plans that will keep pace with the curriculum at a comfortable pace to fit your unique skill set.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I was fortunate to have come from a lineage of entrepreneurs that not only allowed me to observe them in the workplace at a very young age but, even more fortunate, I inherited the genes that provided me an appreciation for what was certainly to be my future. In essence, from the age of 7 I have indulged in setting up my own companies, encouraged to embrace my dreams and to realize that failure was not a negative thing.

My passion has always been to solve problems or make a better mousetrap which has led me to achieve both success and failure. It is trite but must not go without saying that these are intertwined along the journey of any venture.

I currently am on the Board of Directors of the largest Dental Foundation Board of Directors as the only non-dentist for the purpose of helping them think outside the box, formulate, implement and help them to navigate a philanthropic business model. At a younger age I was asked to participate in a Harvard think tank with 11 others. I especially enjoy helping those that share the passion to succeed and help them embrace their failures as real potential victories.

Career Development

Entrepreneurship is all about career development as it's not so much what it is you choose to do but understanding the phases in order to take that next step. Career development is very personal and, from a mentoring point of view, that is the most precious aspect that should be encouraged to take on it's own shape. This, then, empowers you to do whatever you want to do with the confidence and pride that "you" accomplished achieving that next step as it's measurable and accountable with all signs pointing back at your unique qualities made this all possible.

Many times as one goes through a particular phase of business, he/she finds a niche that is of particular interest and provides unforeseen opportunities in other arenas. You may develop a stronger passion for valuing businesses, marketing, accounting pr other career areas and this is where I have helped most individuals as, more often than not, the stress of running a business of not a comfort zone vs. specializing in a particular aspect of business.

College Counseling

I was fortunate to have had a college preparatory school education K-12 at one of the finest schools in the USA. My personal experience began as a sophomore when our school was visited by all IVY's and most top universities in the country. The vetting process then reversed course as students we were well equipped to understand how to assess the best fit for finding the school that best fit out unique educational aspirations and personal compatibility. My experience is one that will provide the student and family with a myriad of questions that need be addressed and how to get answers from colleges/universities when there are thousands of student applications. Sometimes, it's best to go to a community college that offers a high level of expertise and course options while other students need a real driver to get them an introduction and, if necessary, an in person interview at the school(s) they wish to apply.

Dyslexia

I have tutored a middle school student diagnosed with developmental dyslexia for 2 years. I have been part of a team that includes each classroom teacher on a regular basis with once a month meetings with the school's counselor. There is an informal (flexible) treatment plan that has been set forth in her IEP part of which includes my using a multisensory approach to help her with the disparate areas of difficulties has been decided as the best approach. I work primarily on improving these skill sets using a computer primarily as it offers excellent tools for reading, writing, and auditory activities.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have such a keen interest and appreciation for the early foundation some of us are so fortunate to have. This came about as a result of attending a prep school K-12 and truly understanding this benefit when I went on to college where I received a B.A. in Psychology. Our educational foundation provides a myriad of advantages as both enabling one to comprehend and communicate this knowledge as we engage in challenges that are personal, business related and culturally diverse. My strength as a teacher is primarily my sensitivity to the individual(s) unique learning skill set. This has ranged from students that are challenged cognitively to those that excel and need more structure. The key, in my view, again is a strong subject foundation but peer acceptance and the students self esteem are key as part of building this foundation.

Past Publisher and Writer

General Computer

I began very early on using PC's as a means for managing my personal and professional business. In the '90's, I became certified in numerous Microsoft courses to include network server/client courses. My professional experience includes being the Manager of Information Systems for a nationwide company in Carpinteria. I am very comfortable with all the Microsoft operating systems and most applications. As a teacher, I taught general computer courses for the Carpinteria School District in 1996 to lower school grades using a curriculum for building students overall understanding of computers and how to work successfully as a computer user. I thoroughly enjoy teaching, especially one on one, as everyone is unique and learn best at their pace. I have found this promotes an assurance for a continued interest in using computers and a genuine growth of knowledge pattern is in motion. I'm always available for questions as that is imperative when learning how to use computers and omit frustrations or getting stuck using a particular application.

Marketing

I have spent my entire professional career (30+ years) as one that has embraced direct and database marketing. The primary area I have expertise in is utilizing technology to grow a business via the development of marketing strategies. One clarification that needs to be made is marketing is not sales. Marketing is the plan, road map if you will, that is handed off to sales to implement for optimal sales and profit growth. My offer as a teacher is to listen to exactly what it is you want/need to learn whether it be for a job or school. You will find I am an "outside the box" thinker and will most likely provide an energy level for you to garnish a real interest and understanding of your own talent within this arena. I am always available to help answer any questions and help you through specific tasks such as SWOT analysis to a full blown marketing plan.

Special Needs

I have been tutoring a middle school student that is in the Carpinteria School District for over a year. When the parents first came to me I was asked to do an assessment of her skill sets. After my assessment the District agreed that they had made some errors in understanding her cognitive level and subsequently she has been placed in an IEP program. Assessments are difficult, yet, very important in order to understand not only a students current grade level but other factors that may play into learning challenges (e.g. ADD, ADHD, etc.)

Currently, I am tutoring an 8th grade student and have the good fortune of having a heart felt letter from her father as to the progress made and other comments that a parent may want to know about my advocacy and work ethic.

Study Skills

I have taught/tutored in all core subjects and as a result have realized skill sets should be customized as to take full advantage of a students strengths. I use visual aids to attain real benefit.

One example I often utilize is the Excellence in Writing (Andrew Pudewa) platform which helps students as a study guide and skill builder for writing and is quite valuable in building study skills in reading comprehension and spelling for all ages.

Each core course, for example Math, has a foundation from which to build. These need to be nurtured by tools such flash cards, and in some cases spatial structural learning in order for the student to learn good study habits and the skill sets required.

Tennis

I was fortunate to have been born with natural eye/hand coordination and have competed and excelled in numerous sports. My instructors in tennis were well known, as well as my high school tennis coach being a captain of the U.S. Davis Cup team. The largest tournament I won was the Midwest Open in '67 which put me at the top of the national rankings for 16's for 3 weeks as I was in Faces in the Crowd several times in Sports Illustrated. After being heavily recruited out of HS, I ruptured my UCL on my right hand which required surgery to correct. I was not wanting nor willing to undergo this surgery as tennis was more of a passion for me to teach as I found pleasure and success in helping others learn the game. Each individual has different aspects of their game, from beginner to advanced, that I feel I assess quickly and have a gift for helping them utilize their own strengths to improve. I have taught beginner to NCAA 1 college level players.
