I have tutored elementary, junior high and high school students at Mathco in Dallas, Texas and taught Algebra 1 and 2 at the University of Phoenix evening classes in Orange County, CA and Dallas, TX. While mathematics has always come easily for me, I realize that is not the case for all students. I delight in the moment a student grasps a concept and feels that sense of accomplishment and command of the effort. I have had my own personal learning challenges in that I am dyslexic. Even well into my adulthood I still transpose letters and words in both the written and spoken format (thank goodness for spell check) but not numbers. This leaves me with great empathy for those who find mathematics a challenge.
I have worked with elementary school students who want to master something as direct as times tables and whose parents want them to have a greater command of the basics. My greatest comfort zone is pre-algebra, Algebra 1 and 2 and geometry. Because I am an engineer by training, I see many useful applications for this knowledge and often hear students ask why do I have to learn this...I will never need it after this class. There are so many life applications for analysis and critical thinking and the two often have a strong parallels. I am patient and always ask a student if they are seeking tutoring because a parent thinks they need it or because they want to improve.
I am not the standard teacher/math teacher that tutors after school. I have an applications perspective and like to work with a student's text book to make sure they are focusing on the assignment at hand and can become proficient in order to master both the lesson and pass a test.
It's early in the year and always better to stay caught up than to have to catch up....but I can help you with that too. If you have a big test coming up, we can work on weekends as well. No charge if a tutoring session is cancelled within four hours of the appointment time. If cancellation is less than four hours, a 50 percent fee is charge.
Sandra has helped my daughter with her per-algebra. She is very knowledgeable and nice with my daughter. She explains carefully and patiently.
Great teacher. Thanks.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
