About Joey

For as long as I can remember - if you'll allow the cliché phrasing - I have had a passion for words. Growing up, I was that one kid who was "best friends" with the school librarian, who always tried to answer the question in English class. Eventually, I found myself holding an English degree from UCLA, with the impulse to share all the knowledge that comes with it. I’ve since discovered that impulse to stem from my sociable nature, a knack for patience and articulation, and a passion for knowledge. Naturally, I have found tutoring to be the perfect outlet for all of these things!

Over these last few months, I have worked with three different students on a weekly basis. Specifically, a third-grader, a sophomore in high school, and a freshman in college. My goal for each lesson has been to help them better understand, appreciate, and enjoy the books they read and the essays they write. In regards to the third-grader, this mostly means finding stories they are interested in, and then deconstructing the more challenging sentences in order to improve overall reading comprehension. But for the older students, I most often find myself demonstrating various ways in which to analyze and close-read literature, how to uncover the deeper meanings of a passage by investigating certain contextual elements, such as word choice and sentence structure. I do this by first giving the student a chance to analyze on their own, allowing me to see which skills need improvement. I then assist in turning these analyses into a clear, articulate essay, demonstrating a methodology that turns essay writing into a simple science. Once learned, these techniques can be applied to any and all future writing assignments, making them extremely useful for any academic career.

Along the way, I like to place a particular focus on making my lessons interesting and engaging according to each student’s unique sensibilities / needs. That is because I firmly believe that learning is most effective when it is enjoyed. I therefore try to devise lessons and assign homework that are both productive and fun, such as writing short stories or reading passages based on their interests outside of assigned readings. This allows for me to guide progress while maintaining a limited interference in the completion of other school assignments.

As a tutor, I will admit that two months is not very long. However, as a student, I had the privilege of learning in the classrooms of a highly esteemed university. And as a writer, I spend literally every day striving to improve how I communicate and articulate ideas. But most importantly, as a person, I look forward to sharing our time, our brains, and hopefully our laughter together.

I can tutor at any grade level, am available everyday from 9am - 9pm, and can drive out to meet students at whatever location works best for them!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
