About Miguel

I am a very relaxed and easy going tutor who will minimize pressure to the student. I am currently attending Cal State Long Beach where I study Computer Engineering and have been tutoring for over 12 years. The ability to assist others to achieve their goals and/or give a helping hand to someone that is struggling will always make my day. My motto is: "If you can teach it, you really truly know it." I discovered that the best way for most students to learn is to teach to others. Thus, my tutoring style is to first teach the student how to solve a problem then have the student try to explain to me how to do the problem step by step and why they use certain steps. Additionally, I encourage students to visualize or draw a picture the problem if possible. Consequently, they can have a better understanding on why a specific method is used to proceed. It is essential for students to understand instead of memorizing things and that is why I apply this to my tutoring style. If needed, I can also adapt my teaching style that best fits the student.

Overall, I have about 12 years of tutoring experience ranging from Basic Mathematics all the way to 4th semester Calculus. I have been tutoring fellow classmates especially in my math classes ever since I was 12. Although I would not get paid for it, I would feel very proud of myself for helping others in their struggles especially when they would come back to me to thank me for the help I have given them.

I see tutoring and teaching as a form of art. It takes a lot of skill and patience to be able to become a good teacher/tutor that can explain in detail how to proceed with a problem and also be able to be more than willing to answer any of the students' questions. Some students hesitate to ask questions because they feel that they will be made fun of by asking a question. I believe that smart students ask a lot of questions because they know by asking they will get the answer. When I tutor my students, I always encourage them to ask me any questions they have on any of the material we're covering. Ultimately, I am very thorough when it comes to teaching/tutoring a subject as I want to make sure the student gets as much knowledge as they can for each of our sessions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have 10+ years of experience with Algebra

Algebra 2

9+ years of experience with Algebra 2.

C++

I currently hold an Associate of Science degree with Computer Science. To obtain this degree, I was required to take 3 classes of C++. These classes were called, Introduction to Computer Programming, Programming Concepts and Data Structures. I have about 3+ years of tutoring experience with C++.

Calculus

As a computer engineering major at Cal State Long Beach, I use Calculus on a daily basis. Most of my students see Calculus as "the hardest math class ever" but, after helping them understand the material, they realize is isn't as difficult as they thought. A strong background in Algebra will facilitate success for a Calculus student. I am willing to strengthen a student's Algebra skill to ensure the maximum Calculus learning efficiency.

Elementary Math

Elementary math is a very essential skill that we all use everyday. I hold experience in teaching students how to understand addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponents, etc.

Physics

Physics describes the laws on how the world works. Many think physics is difficult but, it becomes simple once you understand what the question is asking. For experience, I have taken physics for engineering classes that include: mechanics, electricity, magnetism, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, special relativity and quantum mechanics.

Prealgebra

Pre-Algebra holds the essential components to understanding and excelling at any higher math class. I have experience tutoring many students by helping them acknowledge how to handle the distribution of negative numbers, graphing points on a number line and on the xy plane, etc.

Precalculus

I have about 5+ years of experience with Pre Calculus.

Trigonometry

I have about 8+ years of experience with Trigonometry.
