About Bonnie

For the last four years I have taught Sociology at a local community college and state university. However, teaching classes as large as 60-100 students has reminded me how much I enjoy working with students one on one. I love learning and I believe that this passion is transferred along to my students. I am proud to say that my students have told me that my classes have inspired and changed their lives. I have been fortunate to mentor many students towards reaching their academic and life goals.

My academic story is not traditional- I like many am a first generation college and graduate student. My parents and I had little understanding on how to navigate the educational system. Fortunately, I flourished in community college and achieved many dreams while receiving my BA and MA: I have studied abroad in Greece, Guatemala and South Africa (where I conducted my master's thesis research). Since then, I have continued traveling, learning, reading and writing in Peru, Ecuador, Alaska, Honduras, Jamaica, Belize, Mexico, Canada and more... I am grateful for all the places that my education has taken me, and I have won grants to many national conferences. I recently received a grant to lead a service learning class at the state university where the students spent time engaging with the non-profit sector and the community.

I believe in active learning- that a student must be engaged in the subject matter and that this process should be fun, interesting and applicable to their daily life. I love all cultures and am open to work with a diversity of people of all ages and abilities. I am excited to hear from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Criminal Justice

I have taught Sociology for four years at Irvine Valley College and CSU Fullerton. Many of my classes crosslisted in Criminology, including Social Inequality and Minority/Majority Race Relations.
