Hello. I've been an English (ESL), reading and writing tutor for over 12 years for children and adults who have come to the United States from Asia, Mexico, Central and South America. All of my classes and lessonshave been one-to-one or in small groups. ESL (English for Speakers of other Languages) classes have focused on conversational English, but they also teach basic English grammar concepts.
I am also assisting school-age students who are new English Language Learners (ELL) and may be struggling in school. First we focus on speaking and understanding English, then work on vocabulary, writing and other subjects.
As a professional writer, I can help any student with his/her writing structure, grammar, and understanding different genres. For reading students, my experience is with phonetic-based learning programs. I've worked with adult literacy based programs (Laubach Way to Reading and the Wilson Reading System) and other Orton-Gillingham based reading programs like "Reading Horizons." Vocabulary development is an important part of any reading program.
Do you need practice to pass the US Citizenship test? Many of my students have passed their interviews and the written and verbal sections of the citizenship test with ease.
Through my own interest in history, I can assist students struggling in American and World History.
My students have praised me for my patience, encouragement, and understanding. I love working with my students.
I'm eager to begin working with you today! Hello. I've been an English (ESL), reading and writing tutor for over 12 years for children and adults who have come to the
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
English is a broad subject. I have tutored students in reading, grammar and writing, whether they are native speakers or non-native English speakers. I have tutored students to understand the differences between fiction and non-fiction, how to determine the main idea of a passage, lecture or book, and how to write a review or summary of what they have read.
I have taught ESL to people 18 years and older for over ten years. My classes focus on conversation and correctly spoken English usage. I have been a reporter and writer for over 40 years, and teach writing and reading. Reading classes begin with learning phonics skills, syllabication, vocabulary and comprehension.
I have taught phonics using three different phonics programs: Reading Horizons, the Wilson Reading Program, and Laubach Way to Reading. All are Orton-Gillingham based reading systems. I had been trained in all three areas, and have earned certificates for Laubach Way to Reading and Wilson Reading. I have been doing this with children and adults for over 12 years as a tutor in an adult literacy agency and with children as a private tutor.
I have worked with reading students who are beginners through 8th grade level. Conquering reading requires learning the sounds that the English alphabet makes and the spelling rules…which are many. Starting with phonics and decoding can then lead to reading sentences, paragraphs and then whole stories. If a student has been diagnosed with Dyslexia or is suspected to have this learning disability, I can help. Reading comprehension is another area students struggle to master. It takes hard work to learn to read. With practice and study you can master it.
I have been teaching reading students for 10 years. Every reading program includes vocabulary development. This begins with vocabulary for the level the student is reading. It also includes writing exercises so the student can better understand the use of the words.
Writing has been a big part of my career and life. With a BA in Journalism, I worked for newspapers, public relations agencies, advertising agencies and corporations doing a wide variety of writing and editing. As the associate director of a literacy center, I taught reading and writing to adults. As an editor, I can help anyone who needs to improve their writing skills. I have worked with children and adults.
