I have had a long and varied education. As an undergraduate I majored in biology, but had 3/4 of a major in theater arts and Scandinavian studies. I wanted to get the most varied education that I could and think that focusing only on one's major is a missed opportunity. My classes in opera and chamber music have remained long after I have forgotten many of my hard science courses. After college I substituted in Chicago, working in 2nd and 3rd grade. I went on to graduate school in biology and from there to medical school. I taught psychology and pharmacology at the University of Phoenix. I have also taught medical students and most recently tutored 6th graders as part of the No Child Left Behind Program.
With my long years of experience, I think I know what a student needs to know to succeed. Learning has to be relevant and fun. Connecting the subject being studied to today's world makes a neuroconnection that holds that learning in place. Having seen a lot of illness and despair I now want to focus on young minds and getting them to feel the "aha" moment and to reach his/her potential. I feel this is the best way to use my time and leave the world a better place than I found it.
