Univ Colorado (Master's)
I am a college biology professor. I have a Masters Degree from University of Colorado in Biology as well as an undergraduate degree in Botany and Environmental Biology.
I have experience working in the environmental regulatory and consulting field for 14 years and I have been teaching college since 2002. I teach online as well as in a traditional classroom setting. My experience is varied - I teach a variety of courses at a variety of campuses and have worked with a diverse group of students including adult-learners, military personnel and traditional college and high school students.
I also have three years of experience teaching high school at a private Christian school. My high school experience involves teaching AP Biology, AP Environmental Science, Honors Biology and College Biology to students in grades 9-12. I have experience in AP test preparation and can administer official AP College Board practice tests in AP Biology and AP Environmental Science as well. This includes grading and reviewing results with students to ensure that the student fully benefits from the practice exam.
I have two children of my own and I am happily married. I enjoy working hard and feel that instilling confidence in a students' own abilities and helping students succeed in their academic endeavors is tremendously rewarding.
I am open to tutoring in alternate zip codes depending on the situation (i.e. the schedule and time of day/needs etc...).
I have passed a live scan Department of Justice background check as part of my employment process and volunteering and being a scout leader at our elementary school requires a background screen as well. I have a current background check for tutoring in this venue.
Initially, to ensure parent and student comfort I prefer to tutor in a quiet public place such as library or with a parent present (if at all possible). As a parent, I want other parents to be comfortable with the safety of their child.
If I feel that your tutoring needs could be better served by an alternate tutor I will be honest and communicate this. Additionally, depending on location and situation/tutoring needs I will consider lowering my fee. I do have a cancellation fee because my time is valuable and I believe it is important to communicate that if a student cancels at the last minute or does not show I will need to be compensated. Similarly, I value a student and parents' time and will extend the same courtesy if I am ill etc...
I welcome your questions and look forward to working with you and your child. I am a college biology professor. I have a Masters Degree from University of Colorado in Biology as well as an undergraduate degree in Botany and Environmental Biology.

We are early in our relationship with Erika, but I can already tell she will be my daughters’ saving grace. She has been struggling with biology but thought she would be able to get through it on her own. At Spring break I decided she needed outside help and was told, by a friend, about WyzAnt. Erika was the first on the list of biology tutors and now I know why. I expressed my concerns to Erika about my daughters’ grade and ability to pass biology. Erika completely understood and said she would be able to help her understand the fundamentals of biology so she would do better on her tests. After two meetings with her, my daughter received her first 'A' on her quiz!!! We were so excited and are looking forward to continuing regular tutoring with Erika! My daughter loves meeting with her and is so happy we decided to hire her.
Christine, I love working with your daughter and helping her improve her biology grade so she can transfer ahead of schedule. it is awesome to watch her confidence grow and see her enjoy the fruits of her labor. I have high hopes for her next exam!
Erica is helping my son succeed in college biology with thoughtful input and support. She is an experienced teacher who can help to diagnose the true challenge facing a student. I recommend her.
Erica helped my daughter prepare for her Honors Biology Final. She was very supportive, encouraging and helpful in preparing her for her test- and because of her assistance, my daughter did great on her final. Thank you Erica!
I,Vee learned that Erica is a good teacher in her subject. What amazing me is that she know the way to encourage and inspire my son in study.
My son wasn't very interested in biology since it doesn't make sense to him it is somewhat related to his interests. After last session, he was inspired and actively chatting with me on enzymes, synthesis, then to photosynthesis, glucous battery... He was excited. And, so am I.
My daughter found herself confused before a big test and Erica worked her schedule to accommodate ours. She explained exactly what was needed and really knew all aspects of "respiration and photosynthesis", drawing helpful diagrams while teaching. We look forward to regular sessions with her to keep ahead of the biology curriculum and feel confident in the material. She was so helpful.
Erica is great. She takes a lot of time with her students and you can tell she has a love for teaching. I highly recommend her.
We are so grateful to have found Erica. She made room in her busy Saturday schedule to accommodate our son for AP Bio tutoring. We were very impressed with her professionalism and her thoroughness. Erica is a very competent and enthusiastic tutor. Not only she is knowledgeable in biology, but she also does a great job of explaining things. She has helped my son understand biology and gain confidence in class. We strongly recommend Erica to any parent looking for a biology tutor for their kid.
Christine, it has been so much fun working with your son and seeing the progress he has made. I am happy he enjoys the sessions and is feeling more confident in class; students are more likely to love learning and succeed in a course when they feel confident in class. It also helps to keep them actively engaged and make use of their precious class time!
I appreciate the time it takes to submit a testimonial; see you Saturday!
We were lucky to find Erica. She responded quickly on short notice and really made an effort to work with our schedule. She is warm, thoughtful, and very professional. We would certainly put her name on the top of the list if we need tutoring again in the future.
Erica genuinely cares about helping her students
succeed. She is by far the best tutor we have
ever used. Her knowledge in the subject of biology
is impressive. As a bonus, she is encouraging
So grateful to have found such a wonderful
person and tutor!!
Sharon, thanks for your comment. Your daughter is a pleasure to work with and I have enjoyed seeing her begin to understand biology and feel more confident with the material.
Erica was very helpful to my daughter who needed help with Honors Biology. She is very detailed-oriented with the lesson and she is very prepared!
Our 14 year old has been working with Erica for several weeks. We are very impressed not only with her substantive knowledge, but also her patience and ability to communicate difficult concepts to a young student (and concerned parents). We value her time, flexibility and enthusiasm for helping young students master difficult material. A proper approach like Erica's can be the difference between being an enthusiastic and educated student versus a puzzled and frustrated student. In short, Erica's excellent.
Erica is very patient and understands the subject matter and how to teach it. My son is taking AP Biology and she was immediately able to help him raise his grade.
Erica is a great AP Biology tutor. I looked for a few weeks for an AP Bio tutor. My son felt comfortable from the first visit. Erica knows the AP Bio material and has lots of additional resources from review books to educational video links to help the students learn. She is positive and a great motivator. She is a bright gem.
My daughter was doing pretty badly on her Hons. Biology class. Thanks to Ms. Erica her grades started improving 2 weeks into her lessons. Excellent tutor!!
Erica has a passion for science. It is obvious she enjoys teaching. My daughter is in Integrated Science in High School. Erica first few lessons were 2 hours long. Which was too much time and information for my daughter. We had to ask her to scale down her explanation and keep the information to one hour. Erica was very understanding and changed her content. I am happy to say that the tutor sessions are effective. My daughter was able to bring up her grades. We are hopeful that her grades will continue to improve with Erica’s tutoring next semester.
Cynthia, thanks for your honest and kind review. As I said, I am sorry that the first few lessons were too long. I am glad you were able to express this to me and that we have been able to scale the lessons back to a length that worked better for your daughter.
I look forward to seeing her for our regular session this week.
Erica is an excellent Biology tutor. Not only is she highly qualified, but she takes her time to make sure you understand the material. She will even make practice exams especially tailored for you to help you prepare for your tests. I highly recommend her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
