University of the Pacific (Education)
Hi, I'm Jen! I have graduated from University of the Pacific with a B.A. in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Human Development and a minor in Psychology. In the Fall of 2017, I will complete my multiple subject teaching credential and start coursework towards a Master's degree. I currently reside in San Ramon, but will be taking coursework in Hayward through Cal State East Bay for my credential.
I understand that there are many different learning styles and that every student works differently. Though I do always try to incorporate multiple methods in each lesson (i.e. visual examples, hands-on techniques, verbal and aural cues), I like to focus on what works best for each individual student. I know that it can be frustrating for students when they struggle with a subject or concept, so I do my best to bring the material to life and make the experience enjoyable. Whenever possible, I like to incorporate students' interests into my examples and make connections to the material through those interests.
I have one year of experience tutoring students in Algebra 1 and Pre-algebra. I did mostly one-on-one work after school to help students improve their grades. I also have an additional year of experience tutoring elementary students in math, especially focused on multiplication facts, fractions, and percents, and reading and vocabulary. This work was a combination of one-on-one and small group work in an after school program. We played different math games to help understand important concepts and completed various reading and vocabulary activities that the students really enjoyed.
I have had the amazing opportunity to teach English to children in a small village in China one summer. While there, I did a lot of work with vocabulary. I made flashcards with pictures that related to the vocabulary words, we played games that helped the children understand the vocabulary terms, matching the words to the pictures, and my professor and I even came up with a song that incorporated the vocabulary words, which made learning more fun!
As an aspiring teacher, I truly want to help students reach their fullest potential and beyond. I find such joy in helping a student succeed and would love to give my guidance and knowledge to as many students as I can. I am always open to suggestions and outside resources that parents and students would like to provide. Feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson! Hi, I'm Jen! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I scored a 34 on the math portion of the ACT.
I have taken and am currently taking several special education classes that cover a variety of special needs, including ADD/ADHD. In these classes we have learned strategies for teaching children with ADD/ADHD. I understand that sometimes students with these needs thrive in an environment that is more hands-on or active.
I have about a year of experience tutoring students in Algebra 1. I also helped my younger brother raise his grade from a B to an A when he took the subject.
I took biology and AP Biology in high school, as well as the AP Biology test, and did well. I still have some of my AP Test Prep materials that were very helpful for me. I have also taken college-level biology courses dealing with human systems, genetics, and anatomy.
I have been tutoring elementary students for almost two years. I have also had about a year of experience in the elementary classroom doing my fieldwork. I have been in a fourth grade, fifth grade, kindergarten, and first grade classroom for a semester each. I have also taken the following courses: Teaching STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in the Elementary Classroom, Elementary Math Concepts, Literacy Development, Teaching Exceptional Learners, and several history courses.
I have about a year of previous experience tutoring elementary students ranging from 1st-5th grade. I also, for the past three years, have participated in the math steeplechase at UOP, where I have helped students solve problems while also having to come up with innovative math problems for students to complete.
I recently completed a college course where we discussed learning and teaching strategies that have to do with phonology, morphology, the IPA, and phonics. We implemented various activities in an after school program at a local elementary school that helped improve students' reading scores. I completed the course with a high "A" and was asked to come back as a mentor/teaching assistant the next year.
I have done fieldwork observations in various special needs classrooms. I have also participated in a program called Book Buddies where I helped students with various special needs and disabilities improve their reading skills. In addition, I have taken several special education classes covering a variety of special needs.
I know many ways to enhance study skills. I can teach students how to effectively organize their time as well as make various graphic organizers and effective flashcards. The various study skills have helped many students improve their test grades in subjects like math and science.
I have experience correcting and helping improve essays from the elementary level through college level. Also, I have helped multiple students with writing and paragraph structure. In addition to this, I have taken an education class in college on how to teach basic writing skills.
