About Ron

I have a passion for helping young people in maximizing their potential and fully utilizing their talents and capabilities. I am very patient and able to diagnose the needs of each student under my care. In addition to the ability to explain things clearly, I can sense the proper strategy for reaching each of my students.

I have a PhD in chemistry from UC Berkeley under the tutelage of the late Nobel laureate Glenn Seaborg. In addition to my diverse background as a research and development chemist, quality control analytical chemist, and technical, scientific, and regulatory writer, I have experience in teaching a senior level chemistry class at Salve Regina University and general chemistry and foundational chemistry lab classes at Cal State East Bay. My classes as a teaching assistant at Berkeley consistently scored above the section average. I would be most happy to assist you or your child in developing your potential, especially as it applies to the real world.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have experience preparing a lesson plan for helping students to prepare for the ACT Math test. My strategy is to help students learn how to quickly find the correct answer by knowing what to focus on as well as methods for getting to the answer quickly.

Algebra 1

I have expertise in working with students in algebra 1. I am able to get them to understand not just the method but also the reason why algebra 1 can be applied to the real world so that they are more motivated to learn about the subject.

Algebra 2

I have extensive experience tutoring algebra 2 and am willing to give practice exams at no extra cost to help evaluate you or your child's areas of strength and weakness as well as monitor your or his or her progress in mastering algebra 2.

ASVAB

I have extensive experience in helping students prepare for standardized tests. I will be able to assist them in learning some of the tricks for taking multiple choice tests. This includes compartmentalizing the questions and working on them in groups. Also I will teach them a method for quickly eliminating the wrong choices and making intelligent choices if they are not 100% certain of the answer for the problem. In addition, I will offer them pointers how to avoid common pitfalls in answering questions such as not reading the question carefully, not being able to figure out exactly what the problem is asking for, or forgetting what is being asked.

Chemistry

I have extensive experience in tutoring chemistry to both high school and college students. Also I have taught at both the high school and college level. I am willing to give practice exams at no extra cost to help evaluate you or your child's areas of strength and weakness as well as monitor your or his or her progress in mastering chemistry.

ESL/ESOL

I am a professional writer that has helped students as young as age 9 to write in English. I am planning on moving to Taiwan in a couple of years after my wife, a Taiwan native, and I retire. As a result, I am certified to teach ESL, and recently taught an ESL class for ThinkTank Learning for teenage students visiting from China. I know several games and methods that can be utilized to help students with minimal speaking, listening, and writing English skills.

Geometry

I have/am tutoring several students in geometry. I am able to help them improve their visual perception to allow them to solve the problems more easily. Also I will be able to help them improve their skill in solving proofs by emphasizing that it is like an interesting puzzle. However, like all puzzles they need to have the proper pieces (theorems, corollaries, etc.) to put it together.

Physical Science

I have experience tutoring physical science and taught a physical science class as a student teacher. I am especially adept at using practical examples to show how science can be applied to the real world as well as how it can be used to develop one's analytical thinking skills.

Prealgebra

My method is to make sure the student has a firm grounding in basic mathematics and is able to enjoy learning prealgebra, not just approach it in a mechanical way. Applications to real life often will motivate students to learn the basics and advance their mathematical skills.

Writing

I have extensive experience tutoring students in writing. I am a professional writer, mainly in the area of science and technology. I am able to teach my students how to not only write using correct grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and punctuation, but also gain joy and satisfaction from writing by utilizing their creative abilities. I also encourage them to increase their appetite for reading to help them improve their writing skills. As a child I read extensively and realized that was critical in developing my writing abilities.
