About Jason

I am currently going back to school at UC Berkeley in order to be a math teacher. I have tutored for over a decade and have worked with students from middle school through graduate school. I have held jobs in marketing and real estate but have found tutoring and teaching to be much more satisfying. With the encouragement and support of my girlfriend, who is a local chemistry teacher, I decided to go back to school in order to teach. I am currently attending UC Berkeley with a 4.0 GPA while pursuing a degree in Pure Mathematics and a minor in Science and Mathematics Education as well as my teaching credential. I recently retook the SAT test so I would be better able to help students prepare for the test, and I scored a 2300 out of 2400 including a perfect score on the mathematics section.
I have tutored all lower division math subjects, including all five "general" calculus courses (derivative, integral, multivariate, linear algebra, ordinary differential equations), as well as elementary math, prealgebra, geometry, algebra, precalculus/trigonometry. I held weekly calculus workshops at the college I attended before transferring to UC Berkeley and enjoyed being able to present ideas to a small group of students in advanced topics. I worked as a tutor in mathematics, economics, critical thinking, history, writing, physical anthropology, and public speaking at the tutoring center of that same college, where students could come for free tutoring, and found it extremely rewarding to be able to work with students of varying abilities and socioeconomic backgrounds. I have helped numerous students with test taking tactics, strategy and preparation. I have taken F students and helped them achieve an A, and I have helped A students receive a deeper understanding of the material and a greater level of mastery.
I always do my best to figure out why a student doesn't understand a specific idea or piece of information, and what I can do to better help them understand and learn. I make myself available for homework help via phone and text. I have many former and current students who text me their homework problems for my help between sessions, and I do my best to answer their questions via text or work out the problem on paper and text back my work at the earliest opportunity.
I sincerely enjoy improving a situation, as well as feeling like I've made a life easier or better, and find tutoring and teaching to be a rewarding way of doing this.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have been tutoring algebra and geometry since I myself was in high school, over a decade ago. Since many of the students I have tutored are in high school or middle school, algebra and geometry are areas of expertise and great familiarity for me. I decided to go back to school in order to teach. I am currently attending UC Berkeley with a 4.0 GPA while pursuing a degree in Pure Mathematics and a minor in Science and Mathematics Education.

Algebra 2

I have been tutoring algebra and geometry since I myself was in high school, over a decade ago. Since many of the students I have tutored are in high school or middle school, algebra and geometry are areas of expertise and great familiarity for me. And I have tutored for over a decade.

Calculus

I have taken derivative calculus, integral calculus, vector/multivariable calculus, ordinary differential equations, and linear algebra and received an A in each course. These are the most common first five calculus courses at colleges. I passed the AP Calculus exam while in high school, which covers first semester calculus. Throughout my courses I would assist fellow students with problems and set up study groups to help prepare my classmates for tests. I also held weekly calculus workshops at the college I attended before UC Berkeley, sometimes more than one per week.

Differential Equations

I received an A in my ordinary differential equations course at the college I attended before UC Berkeley, including an A on one exam and the final, and high Bs on both other exams, and an A on every quiz and assignment. I can submit an unofficial transcript if desired. My instructor said he identified me early on by my in class questions as a student who would receive an A. I still communicate with him regularly.

Elementary Math

I worked as a personal assistant, and my bosses had three children, one of whom was in third through sixth grade from the time I worked for them. I tutored her in all of her subjects, organized her time and oversaw her homework completion. I would sometimes tutor her and her friends at the library in math and sciences, and proofread their written work.

Elementary Science

While in elementary school I participated in every science fair, and placed in several. While working as a personal assistant, I would help my boss' daughter brainstorm ideas for her science fair projects, and supervise and assist with the creation of her projects. I also helped my other boss' daughter participate in the recent Google science fair, although she did not become a finalist.

English

I received an A in my college level English Composition course and had two of my three papers selected to be used as examples for future classes. I worked as a writing tutor at the college I attended before UC Berkeley.

Geometry

I have been tutoring geometry since I myself was in high school, over a decade ago. Since many of the students I have tutored are in high school or middle school, algebra and geometry are areas of expertise and great familiarity for me. And I have worked with students from middle school through graduate school.

Grammar

I grew up with a Korean mother, and watching the way people spoke to her since English was her second language, I did my best to make sure my grammar and articulation were immaculate. I studied grammar and phonetics extensively as a child, and continued into my teens.

Linear Algebra

I received an A in my linear algebra course at the community college I attended before UC Berkeley, and received an A on every exam and assignment. I can submit an unofficial transcript if desired. I also organized a workshop lead by the instructor that many of my fellow classmates attended before exams, and most of the students in this workshop did very well.

Macroeconomics

I recently took two accelerated Economics courses, both micro and macro. I received over 100% in both classes and would often assist the professor in helping students with worksheets during class. I was the only economics tutor at the college I attended before UC Berkeley, and had a regular group of students I helped weekly with their assignments.

Martial Arts

I am a third degree black belt in Shaolin Kempo Karate, under Rick Alemany. I studied formal lessons from age seven to thirteen, and continued independently until a few years ago at age twenty-eight. I competed in several point sparring tournaments as a kid, winning all of the events in which I competed. I have had a few amateur MMA fights, the most recent being around four years ago at age twenty-eight. I am currently enrolled in Brazilian Jujitsu classes in order to develop a new skill set and challenge myself.

Microeconomics

I recently took two accelerated Economics courses, both micro and macro. I received over 100% in both classes and would often assist the professor in helping students with worksheets during class. I was the only economics tutor at the college I attended before UC Berkeley, and had a regular group of students I helped weekly with their assignments.

Prealgebra

Math is my area of expertise, and algebra is a particular area of strength. Preparing students for algebra in prealgebra is something I am well suited for, since I have tutored many students in algebra and beyond and know the skills needed to pass prealgebra and the skills that will be used in higher math classes.

Precalculus

I have tutored several students in precalculus. My general math skills and calculus ability are very strong, and being that I have excelled in calculus I believe I can prepare students well for the skills they would need to succeed in precalculus moving forward to calculus. I have held jobs in marketing and real estate but have found tutoring to be much more satisfying.

Proofreading

I have done some proofreading and copy writing professionally, as well as offering my proofreading services to all of my tutoring clients.

PSAT

I have helped most of my students prepare for academic tests at school as well as comprehensive tests such as the PSAT and SAT. Specializing in math, I have often worked with students on how to discern information from word problems, and identifying "wrong"/"possibly correct"/"correct"/"most correct" answers in multiple choice scenarios. I also work with students on managing their studying time, and how to organize their time and effort for maximum efficacy. I generally advocate early investment of time so that immediately before the test they can relax and recharge with a light overview of material.

Reading

My reading comprehension is very high, and I have helped numerous students with reading comprehension and reading test taking strategies. Mostly identifying key points, and how to hold and identify main ideas both from text and from questions.

Study Skills

I have helped most of my students prepare for academic tests at school as well as comprehensive tests such as the ACT and SAT.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is an essential skill to succeeding in calculus, and is often covered in precalculus and sometimes even a comparable course. My general math skills and calculus ability are very strong, and being that I have excelled in calculus I believe I can prepare students well for the skills they would need to succeed in trigonometry moving forward to calculus.
