I am a credentialed elementary school teacher. I have spent the majority of my teaching career, since 1990, as a substitute teacher for the Marin County public schools. I work three to four days a week, and have enjoyed classes that I have been requested to teach in. I am dedicated and committed to the field of Education. I particularly enjoy teaching, and tutoring grades kindergarten through third, because these students bring sincerity and enthusiasm to the learning process. Although these ages can also be challenging, the effort and eagerness to overcomes academic hurdles can be clearly seen.
As a tutor, my students understand that we work as equal partners. This team attitude, inspires them to stay focused, and work through all parts of their program. Working for an In Home Tutoring company has given me experience developing individualized programs, that suit the specific needs of my students. I adapt materials I find from educational websites online, and use use my own curriculum to develop my programs.
I am punctual, and arrive ten minutes before the tutoring session begin to set up my materials. I have a good rapport with all parents and their children. I am always available to work beyond the scheduled session, and never feel that I need to be compensated for it. I can always be called, or e-mailed through WyzAnt, if you have any questions about scheduling, or the progress of your child.

We can't say enough positive things about our experience with Bonnie. She is prompt, prepared, knowledgeable, encouraging, supportive and genuinely cares about our son. She goes above and beyond by researching and securing age-appropriate reading material she thinks our son would actually enjoy reading and incorporates incentives he would like. She tracks his progress in a variety of formats so that he can visually see his performance and progress. She provides detailed lessons plans for the upcoming session, as well as detailed reviews of the lesson just finished. Our son's phonics have improved tremendously and his teacher has noticed a marked improvement in his reading and spelling. We are thrilled to have found Bonnie.
Thank you for your wonderful written feedback! I am delighted that the tutoring is having a positive effect on your son's reading and spelling performance in school.
Bonnie is a very patient, prompt, enthusiastic, and experienced tutor for my 6-year daughter (first grader). She is very organized and flexible with her schedule. Bonnie customizes her lessons for my daughter and develops games and learning aids to suit her. She makes learning fun and memorable.
Since Bonnie has helped my daughter learn phonics and reading comprehension, my daughter has been more motivated to read on her own. My daughter has also learned her sight words well because Bonnie has made a memory game for her. My daughter is also doing well in math and is in the 90th percentile in class because Bonnie has provided learning tools, like the number line and word problems for her to work on. I strongly recommend Bonnie to parents seeking reading and math tutoring for their children from grades K-3.
Thank you very much for your kind feedback. It really touched my heart.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My name is Bonnie, and I am qualified to teach the complete subject matter curriculum at the Kindergarten through Sixth Grade levels, as mandated by the California Department of Education.
A comprehensive subject matter approach to each of these grade levels, serves each student's current academic needs. The California Education Code has adopted a study course for grades Kindergarten through Sixth, that includes instruction in all of the academic areas of learning.
The subject of English includes a thorough understanding and appreciation for language and literature, along with a skill foundation in speaking, listening, reading, spelling, handwriting, and composition.
Mathematics includes operational and problem solving skills, as well as a clear understanding of concepts.
Social sciences includes the subject matter of anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, and sociology. These courses are taught to fit the individual grade levels of the students.
Science, which includes both physiology, and biology, places an emphasis on where human beings stand in ecological systems, as well as on experimental inquiry.
Visual and performing arts includes the subjects of dance, music, theatre and visual arts, with a focus on developing an artistic appreciation, as well as creative expression skills.
Health teaches the principles and practices of individual, family, and community health.
Physical education encompasses physical activities for the health of each student's body and mind.
As a Substitute Teacher, my role has been to instruct students at the Kindergarten through Sixth Grade levels, as stated in the California State Education Code. With this focus and instructional purpose, I have dedicated myself to helping form well rounded students. As a tutor, I use the Code as a foundation to develop individualized instructional programs to foster an eagerness to grow an learn among my students.
As a Kindergarten through Third Grade Certificated Teacher, I am well versed on the meaning of phonics, as well as on the effective strategies required to teach it. I have a great deal of experience at tutoring and teaching phonics at these grade levels, and understand what works best for these students.
Phonics is a reading and spelling teaching technique, that emphasizes letter symbols and their sound relationships. For example, the letter 'c' can make a soft sound, like the sound of the letter 's', or a hard sound, like the sound of the letter 'k'. As indicated, phonics stresses the relationships between language sounds and the letters that are represented for those sounds.
As a teacher and tutor of phonics, I have found that students learn it best when it it taught in an interactive and meaningful way. Word Sorts, a phonics based reading activity, gives the students the opportunity to cut out and glue words in columns with the same vowel or consonant sounds as the target words.
Although learning phonics rules can be dry and tedious at times, when they are taught as a rhyme, they make learning how to read much easier. For example, the rhyme, "When two vowels go a walking, the first one does the talking," applies to tricky vowel combinations in words like dream, boat, and bait. Clapping out the syllables of challenging words also makes the process of learning phonics easier: as with 'f-ar-m'.
I have touched on some effective phonics teaching strategies that I have implemented with primary students. There are many more excellent techniques being used which I plan to include in my phonics tutoring programs.
I have passed the Reading Subject Test for the WyzAnt.
