About Steve

My name is Steve C., and I live in San Rafael, CA. I have a Master's Degree in Political Science. I have taught college courses at Ventura College and Citrus College, I recently taught several subjects at a private high school in Santa Barbara (including Pre-Calculus, Algebra I and II, World History, English Lit and US Government)and I have tutored for government/political science courses and basic statistics courses as well. My undergrad work was at Monmouth College in Illinois. I double-majored in Music and Business Administration. My teaching evaluation scores have all been very high, well above the norm. I believe this is because I make every effort to turn material that students think is dull into interesting stuff.

My style is a mix of Jon Stewart and Thomas Friedman. The point is to get the student to understand the subject by engaging them with the material as it relates to them in the real world. I avoid the trappings of being politically correct; my analysis is non-partisan, and I believe that understanding all sides of a position is essential. Even if you hate politics, or statistics, or whatever subject you're considering using me for, you'll not hate it when I'm done. You'll learn, and you'll do well in your class.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Baseball

Chronologically:

I was the only 9 year-old to make my little league baseball team, a team which went 24-0 and advanced to the regional semis before losing our bid for the little league world series

I went on to be the first player in the history of Galesburg little league to play in four city championships, winning three

I was #1 singles in tennis in college, and once I grew into my body (I went to college at 16), I decided also to play baseball (tennis and baseball seasons are concurrent, but Athletic Director allowed it). I hit .400 my senior year for conference championship team

Played in traveling tournament team at 19, hit 3rd in the lineup, pitched and played center field; we went 36-10 and won several tournaments across the midwest, I was named team MVP

I played competitively for MABL teams in Southern California, leading the Santa Barbara 18+ league in hitting at the age of 36, after previously leading the league in pitching wins

Criminal Justice

I twice served as Teaching Assistant to an upper-division Criminal Justice course at UC Santa Barbara; I was named lead-TA for the second course. This course was taught by Superior Court Justice Joseph Lodge. I was responsible for clarifying lecture materials, preparing students for assignments and exams, and I graded the exams as well for the 100+ students in my sections.

Political Science

I earned a Master's Degree in Political Science from UCSB.

I have taught political science courses at Napa Valley College, Ventura College and Citrus College.

I taught US Government at Eureka School in Santa Barbara.

Social Studies

I have a master's degree in Political Science from UC Santa Barbara

I have taught several political science courses at Citrus College, Ventura College, and Napa Valley College

Additionally, I have spent the last several years working as a tutor, both privately and for tutoring centers, during which I have taught a range of subjects, including world history, US History and AP history

Many of the changes to the SAT reflect a shift towards more social studies-based passages for both reading comprehension and grammar - I've been thoroughly trained in this material
