About Robert

I recently returned to Los Angeles after spending a remarkable year overseas teaching ESL in Cirebon, Indonesia.

While I embarked on my teaching assignment with the clear directive to guide my Indonesian students to fluency in English, our rich mutual cultural exchange will be unforgettable. I have been moved by so many of the experiences my students and I shared. Perhaps the most significant affirmation came about when at the conclusion of our school year – young people who believed they would never live or work beyond their immediate community – shared that as a result of our time together, they not only hoped, but were planning to continue their studies abroad – more specifically, the United States. Perhaps this is because they saw in me, the reality that people can live their dreams, when they apply hard work and focus to achieve those dreams – and sometimes have a helping hand to guide them. I was able to live one dream in my prior 14-year profession – working as a Computer Animator for films such Alice in Wonderland, Shrek, Madagascar. This ended up being an unexpected silver lining as a teaching tool as my students were enthralled with the opportunity to work in Hollywood. No matter how much I emphasized how much hard work is involved, they were ready to sign on to their studies, when they saw that it could possibly lead to an exciting and fulfilling career.

Now, I am humbled and thrilled by the opportunity to live my dream as a teacher. In a movie studio as well as in a classroom environment, I rely upon my acquired skills and experience: to be creative and plan effectively; locate and solve problems; and to generate rapport between diverse groups of people. Through my ESL teaching experience, I have developed an ability to reach students of many different levels and backgrounds, and motivate them to do the best they can. Making a difference with students and seeing them learn and grow as individuals is the most fulfilling part of my experience as a teacher.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I am a professional artist and arts teacher based in Los Angeles. I have shown my work in galleries from LA to New York to Berlin. I currently am the Media Arts Coordinator at a private language school in Redondo Beach, EF Redondo Beach.

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching ESL in the United States and abroad for the past four years. I love teaching ESL. It has given me the opportunity to reach students from diverse backgrounds in every corner of the world. Teaching ESL at a language school in Cirebon, West Java was the greatest challenge of my life as well as the most rewarding experience of my life.

Film

I am currently the Media Arts Coordinator and Lecturer of the Media Arts Program at Education First, Redondo Beach. I wrote the syllabus and teach the Video Production class in the program. I was an A-listed animator in Hollywood for 14 years. My credentials can be found on IMDB. My credits include: Shrek, Shrek2, Madagascar, Star Trek, Alice In Wonderland. I received my MFA from Hunter College in 1982, and began animating in 1996. I am often called upon to help directors with their films. I am happy to do it, because I love making movies!

Painting

I received my MFA degree in Painting from Hunter College in New York City in 1985. Over the past 25 years, I have shown my paintings in New York and Los Angeles galleries, as well as in group exhibitions in Europe. My work has been critically acclaimed in publications. I now teach painting and drawing at a private school in Redondo Beach.
