Recently retired from classroom instruction, I taught science and mathematics for more than 20 years at the middle school, high school, and community college levels. During my high school years, I served as the AP Coordinator, Department Head, and teacher of Statistics and Calculus AB & BC. My test prep students are attending or have attended colleges and universities to include: Columbia, Harvard, John Hopkins, MIT, Notre Dame, Stanford, Tulane, UC Berkeley, UCLA, University of Pennsylvania, USC, Yale, and a host of others.

At the middle school level, I implemented and monitored common core curriculum for public, parochial and private school systems and prepared students for the Mathematics portion of the Los Angeles Archdiocese's annual Academic Decathlon (ACADECA) competition. In my 6 years of preparing students for the competition, 7 of my students finished in the top 7 of 125 schools, twice finishing third, 2nd in 2017, and this year's State Championship. My students almost always received their first choices for high school to include: Archer, Bishop Montgomery, CAMS, Chadwick, Crossroads, Harvard-Westlake, Immaculate Heart, Loyola, Mayfield, Notre Dame, Providence, Ribet, Rolling Hills Prep, and countless more.

Currently, I serve on the Board of Directors of "School of Skills", a non-profit, 501(c) 3 charity which focuses on the development of student-athletes through athletic and academic rigor. My primary role in this organization is to provide mathematics classroom instruction, standardized test prep instruction, NCAA Clearinghouse support and basketball skills development.

In all the aforementioned, I set high standards for the students with a casual but focused attitude. I am more than familiar with the use of technology in mathematics instruction, common core standards, and both formal and informal assessment methods.

I look forward to working with you!

Since earning my B.A. and M.Ed. at U.C.L.A., I have more than twenty years of teaching and coaching experience in a variety of settings to include middle school, high school, and community college. At the onset of the Common Core transitions, I became the lead teacher for 11 years, at the high school and junior high school levels, responsible for implementation and monitoring of Common Core Standards for my respective districts. Thereafter, I was presented with the opportunity to attend Pearson Professional Development seminars, which enabled me to gain a deeper understanding of the scientifically based instruction demanded for a smooth transition to the new Common Core Mathematics, Science, and English Standards.

Spelling,

Spelling

Since earning my B.A. and M.Ed. at U.C.L.A., I have more than twenty years' experience in teaching K through 12 students. Many teachers teach and most of us learned to spell by giving students a weekly list of words to practice and then testing them. In truth, the only people that really learned through that method became teachers in later life. Moreover, it's just plain boring. I practice the use of a student's prior knowledge to serve as a guide for new instruction. Then I develop a program based upon his/her stage of development to maximize results. In summary, I select a group of words that demonstrate a particular spelling pattern and sequence these patterns. Students are expected to become "word detectives", engaged in an ongoing attempt to make sense of word patterns and their relationships to one another. Spelling "rules" are not dictated by me for students to memorize. Spelling patterns and generalizations are discovered by students through a variety of resources. Well-versed in the role that both Common Core standards and technology play in student learning, I set high standards in a calm and supportive manner.

Vocabulary

Since earning my B.A. and M.Ed. at U.C.L.A., I have more than 10 years of vocabulary teaching experience. Vocabulary knowledge is critical to reading comprehension. Well versed in the role that technology plays in student learning, I set high standards in a calm and supportive manner.

Charismatic and dedicated teacher

Only had a couple sessions with Ken and think he is fabulous. He helped my friend and I out with Math and Science preparation for the CSET. He is well informed about curriculum, I highly recommend him as a tutor!

very patient

Really helped me understand concepts that I had forgotten. Didn't make me feel silly for not remembering. Worked with me until I understood.

Ken is a very knowlegeable and patient tutor.

Ken is an excellent tutor. I liked how he was patient explaining a math method other ways, if I didn't understand something. He is very knowledgeable about knowing the rules of solving all types of math. He also taught me specific details/helpful hints of how to solve particular math problems. I appreciate how he took the time to create worksheets to help me during my tutoring session. During the tutoring session, he encouraged me that I was doing a good job with math. I appreciated the encouragement, because it has made me want to study and know that I am able to conquer my goals. Thank you so much Ken.

Excellent experience

I can't THANK him enough! Emailed him last minute because my son confessed he didn't understand the test material for his test in two days and Ken was awesome! Responding promptly, being agreeable and open to helping in person or using FaceTime all within one night. When wet met in person, he was a professional, on time and 100% knowledgeable. Truly grateful and my son is totally prepared! I would definitely recommend!
