My main area of expertise is in working with children with Autism. Specifically, I have found there to be a high need for academic tutoring with older children (7-13) who have either graduated their ABA program or have learned to manage their behaviors and are now able to focus more of their attention on "catching up" academically. The two main areas I have the most experience teaching are reading comprehension and math as these are typically the areas that are the most challenging for my students.
In regards to my prior experience, I have worked as a behavioral therapist in both home and school settings. I have mainly worked with children who are higher functioning. I am familiar with ABA, but have found that older children benefit from a more flexible approach focusing on generalization and integration of skills. I am thoroughly familiar with Lindamood-Bell and I am currently working on developing strategies to teach the relationships between words and ideas and to create new associations between ideas and concepts. I have been privately tutoring academically for 3 years and have worked in this field for almost 5 years. In addition, I am also attending USC to obtain a MA in counseling.
My greatest strength is building rapport and using the child's interest to fuel and engage the tutoring sessions. I believe motivation and building a positive attitude toward learning is the fundamental key that will drive any student to success. I am completely confident that any student is capable of learning; it is simply a matter of finding the right approach and method that works for the unique learning style of each child. It is then my goal to find and convey a method of teaching and explaining that works for each individual student.
In addition to tutoring children with Autism, I am also willing to tutor math and reading comprehension in general. While I am not particularly qualified to tutor calculus and college level type math. I still feel very comfortable teaching algebra, geometry and any elementary level math (fractions, long division, word problems etc.).
Finally, I am extremely passionate about music. I have played drums for 15 years (since I was 12- I am now 27). I have recorded and written my own material in a group and individual setting. I have mixed and mastered all of my own material and even the material of others. I would definitely be open to mix, record, drum and share all of musical experience and knowledge with anyone interested. I would also be willing to do this at a reduced rate considering I am not a true "expert" and also the fact that I simply love to create and talk music.
I look forward to meeting anyone interested. I am willing to provide any other information necessary and answer any other questions.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I currently hold a Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and have 8 years of experience working as an ABA therapist. I have provided academic services to children diagnosed with autism for 6 years and have previous experience working for Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes. They specialize in providing reading services to children with special needs.
I have played the drums for 15 years (I started at age 12 and I am 27 now). I feel best suited to teach the basics and really how to play in a band and approach the instrument from a creative perspective. For those students who want to learn double bass and crazy technique, I am not the best candidate. However, if you are really interested in MUSIC and creativity, then I can definitely help you to explore drums as the medium to explore your creativity. I also love mixing, writing lyrics and songwriting. Also, I am into alternative music like a majority of the stuff on KCRW. I see myself as a musician and not just a drummer. It would be my goal to impart that approach to those looking for "lessons."
