About Kathryn

A mentor and personal friend once said to me late one night in the office as I asked her why she was still here teaching me how to model a deal we were working on together: "If you give someone a fish, you feed that person for a day. Teach that same person how to fish, and you feed the person for a lifetime." This piece of advice guides me each and every day of my personal and professional life.

I started tutoring while in high school for elementary school kids and later taught personal finance and entrepreneurship classes while in college to high school students in the South Side of Chicago. When I became an investment banking analyst, I thought the teaching would stop; however, I was fortunate enough to become a mentor to aspiring college students who were interning at the bank. In my current role at a private equity firm, I am tasked with mentoring and teaching financial analysts with little to no experience in finance, modeling, and presentations. I am also an alumni mentor for first generation college students who are still exploring their options after college.

I love teaching because I simply enjoy helping others achieve their goals. My goals for each session is to get my student out of their own way and to have confidence that whatever the task, setting specific goals and milestones will allow them to exceed their own expectations.

Aside from my full-time job, I work on various side projects as a financial consultant, conducting market, financial, and cost-benefit analyses, financial projections, valuation, and operating models.

I have mentored many young professionals in the finance industry and each has successfully achieved his or her personal goals (i.e. securing a full-time job after an internship, negotiating a pay raise or promotion, learning key skill sets in their day-to-day jobs).

I work at home and am generally free after 3pm PT for online sessions.

I look forward to hearing from you and hope I can help you accomplish your next goal!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

In my current role at a private equity firm, I often have to advise clients on a variety of issues, including profitability, market expansion, and scaling up operations. I conduct thorough due diligence relating to corporate structure, capitalization, historical and projected financials, taxes, and market drivers. I am also a freelance financial consultant and have worked on various projects relating to capital raises, valuation, start-up cost analysis, cost-benefit analysis, and financial projections. In all cases, I am able to translate key indicators from excel models and relevant analyses into investor presentations and general company overviews.

Career Development

I have mentored multiple students and professionals over the years and have a successful track record of helping each individual accomplish their specific goals. Goals have included, securing an internship, securing a full-time offer during an internship, making a career switch, learning how to conduct various analyses (market, financial, regulatory), and negotiating pay and/or promotions. I also review resumes professionally, focusing on design and content.

College Counseling

I have assisted many high school students with the application process by proofreading their essays and preparing them for in-person interviews. I've also assisted in helping them narrow their list of applications by going through each individual's preferences relating to academic interests, location, and student body size.

As a young alumni, I have engaged with my university's career center to assist current students in securing internships and full-time jobs. For instance, I will often review resumes and assist with interview preparation. I am also a mentor for the university's first generation program, which allows me to connect and offer personal and professional advice to a matched student.
